The American people are sick and tired of being afraid to speak their minds

"The American people are sick and tired of being afraid to speak their minds lest they be politically smeared as 'Communists' or 'Fascists' by their opponents. Freedom of speech is not what it used to be in America. It has been so abused by some that it is not exercised by others.

As a United States senator, I am not proud of the way in which the Senate has been made a publicity platform for irresponsible sensationalism. ... I do not like the way the Senate has been made a rendezvous for vilification, for selfish political gain at the sacrifice of individual reputations and national unity. ... It is high time that we stopped thinking politically as Republicans and Democrats about elections and started thinking patriotically as Americans."

- Margaret Chase Smith, (R) Maine; delivered on the Senate Floor, 1 June 1950. Sitting two rows behind her was Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Whether you are left or right or center or weird or wack or male or female or any race or any age, you have a right to speak your piece. Your message can be attacked, but the personality never should be.

Many on this board, including myself, at times stoop much lower than is right.
Obuthole is the worst, he hates freedom of speech.
You are wrong, for it is you that hates it. But I will defend your right to speak in such a silly way.
Typical libtard, saying one lie and believes another.

"Not a few “but hundreds of American Communists abetted

Soviet espionage in the United States” in the 1930s and 1940s."

Typical of McCarthyites: no names. When names are given, no proof is given.

Venona did point that American counterintel efforts caught the Rosenbergs, which is (surprise) when counterintel efforts are supposed to do.

You are doing exactly what the Senator thumped.

Fringe haters, like you, are going to be pointed out for what you are, haters. Don't like it? Tough.

I've never been afraid to speak my mind. Don't like my opinion? There are 7 billion others from which to choose. Don't like me? Kiss my ass. Just sayin...

I am not a fringe hater, I am full in hating socialists.

You would not know a socialist if it kissed your butt.

A socialist is anyone with whom you disagree.

I am absolutely right. You are a hater. I will make it easy for you. Every time you hate or misuse the word "socialist" I will point it out to you.

Its called as neighborhood pressure. They will do their best to prevent you to explain your ideas while the same people behave like they are ardent supporters of freedom of speech.

Local norms always try, whether in Jasper Texas or Baltimore, to limit the opposition's right to speech. That is why it is so important to defend folks like Luddly or TwoThumbs or AmericanFirst, etc.

Margaret Chase RINO. Jammie-jake's bedside pin-up.

Any questions?

Yeah I gots one.

When did we revise the Constitution to where elected representatives exist to represent a political party rather than their own constituents?

Maybe it's a Maine thing? Because I recall hearing the same red whine about Olympia Snowe. And Susan Collins. Interesting that it's the same constituents in the same state, innit?

Authoritarians --- not content with their own residences, nooooo they gotta control Maine too.

Then again, maybe I misread. Maybe they just don't like women. Standby Kelly Ayotte..

I suppose I see it all as a double edged sword honestly.

I come on here knowing full well that people have stances I strongly disagree with, but even with their stances, I also see people who care about what they believe in and are passionate about those beliefs, even under pressure to let them go. Rather than most of the people I actually interact with who don't care, don't vote, and don't pay attention to what is happening to our country.

Somehow I find it comforting to know that I'm not the only one who still cares enough to argue.

For many years now the left has worked tirelessly to silence anyone who opposes them.
They have used race, gender, and now sexual identity to steamroll anyone in their way.
Say anything negative about Obama, and they immediately will claim racism as the root of your criticism.
They will soon be using gender once the election heats up now that Hillary is officially in.
Once she's in the White House, they'll be claiming you hate women if you criticize her in anyway.
The whole idea here is simply to shut people up.

funny, how come that doesn't seem to be working on you..? :blahblah:

That's exactly right, because I know how the left operates, and how they work to end many arguments by throwing out the hater card, race card, homo card, gender card, etc.
However, if I were in the public eye, I would have to conform to a certain way of thinking or face severe consequences if I spoke out from what they would perceive as the wrong point of view.

That does play into the problem, doesn't it? Everyone is walking on eggshells in the public eye, then when we see their "private beliefs" it's a media circus... I miss "honesty" It's like, while I understand /why/ they do it, it's just dishonest which ultimately just leads to more and more dishonest leadership. I mean if someone hides something because it's not PC, like being a racist, then doesn't that sort of "make it okay" in some way to lie about other things as well - like stealing money, having affairs, or lying about global temperatures; the slippery slope theory I suppose.

I also miss "differences" in politics and politicians, these days it practically doesn't matter who you vote for, they're both just as bad heh

Senator Smith's point seems to have sailed blissfully over your head. She's chastising her own party here --- i.e the right -- for its intolerance. And more broadly the idea of intolerance in general. It was aimed straight at McCarthy and his ilk. And as history showed, she was right in calling out that demagoguery ... smack dab in the middle of a time when standing up for Liberal values like that was usually shouted down.

Amen to this. Going online is also the better way to learn first hand about how things are going in other parts of the U.S. compared to where ever it is that you are at because people in those areas are who you are talking to. :) :) :)

God bless you always!!!

He died, appropriately, shamed and an alcoholic.

Any your side proudly continues on his legacy. now THAT's Ironic.
Oh...we have a HUAC? We have a black list that keeps people from being hired? We are throwing people into prison for refusing to testify (rat out) against their fellow citizens? We aren't making stuff up and holding news conferences and then not producing the "evidence?

Not the same exact things, but close enough. Your side uses government to punish people for their beliefs, your side castigates anyone who disagrees with you, and anyone who associates with them, Your side uses smear tactics to ruin people's reputations. The list of people ruined over simple political disagreements with progressives is long and varied.

" Your side uses government to punish people for their beliefs, your side castigates anyone who disagrees with you, and anyone who associates with them, Your side uses smear tactics to ruin people's reputations" applies to all parties and many politicians.
