Why would he be "mad" in the wake of such an event?

Short of his using it as a specious pretext for aiding and or abetting the DPRK, I'd think he couldn't care less about the fate of a few hundred Syrian troops. That Syria, the state and its dictator, remain in place and continue to serve as Russia's proximate pawn-surrogate of sorts against U.S. hegemonic ideological advances in the Middle East and the tactical value of Syria as a naval direct-access point to the Mediterranean Sea form the beginning, middle and end, IMO, of any material interest Russia/Putin has in Syria.
