The “disproportionate representation” of William Shakespeare in the theatre has propagated “white, able-bodied, heterosexual, cisgender male narratives”, according to researchers in an £800,000 taxpayer-funded project.

The claim has prompted critics to accuse the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which has funded the study by academics at the University of Roehampton, of promoting “cultural clickbait”.

The project, devoted to “centering marginalized communities in the contemporary performance of early modern plays”, is due to be completed in two years’ time.

The researchers want to challenge the “normative trend” in “classical theatre” arising from “the disproportionate representation of William Shakespeare in scholarship and performance”.

In response they are mounting a production of a comedy by Shakespeare’s contemporary John Lyly, Galatea, which features characters disguised as the opposite sex. The researchers say the play offers “an unparalleled affirmative and intersectional demographic, exploring feminist, queer, transgender and migrant lives”.

They say the play “has almost no stage history since 1588”, adding that “Diverse Alarums”, the name of the project, “will transform this state of affairs with a unique combination of methods, ranging across early modern studies, practice-as-research, audience studies, qualitative research, trans, queer and disability studies”.

Comment:
Leave Shakespeare alone.
The Radical Left can write their own plays.
They are attempting to erase mainstream culture.

Agreed. Why dont they use their immense talents and create a superb work of art?
But its much easier to take donated funds and pick apart the work of someone else who lived in a different world hundreds of years ago. What a collosal waste of peoples' time

They need to make it more culturally diverse like "Romeo Romeo where you be at Romeo?"

there were no females in the globe theatre troupe. ophelia and lady mcbeth were played by men in costume. hamlet was a drag show.

shakespeare worked in the theatre , a career known to be exclusively straight? he at least knew and worked with some of the wokest people in 16th cent london.

and this entire business is too stupid for words. the elezibethans had barely wandered in to the renaissance much less a 21st century awareness of the humanity of others.

They are probably mad that white (and Asians) people are pretty much the most successful people in the world's history and just like anything else, most non whites want to drag everyone down to their level so they can feel like they matter.

Aerospace, medicine, electrical, engineering, architecture, literature, oceanography, astronomy, communications, the internet, manufacturing and industry, science and physics, and so on. Where would we be right now if it weren't for the white people and Asians that have advanced our species?

Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot, karl benz created what is known as a car and Henry Ford later really pushed cars by leaps and bounds. Those 3 men have done more for the world than any of all the blacks have ever done for mankind.

I don't understand all the white hate. So what, someone is better at something than your people are. Just live your life, do the best you can and remember one day you'll be dead and nothing will have mattered anymore. Men are better at sports than women but that doesn't mean women are lesser people. Just be glad we had white people to make your current world a better place, if it weren't for them when wouldn't have a lot of things we do right now.

"Arts and humanities research council"? A fancy name for an anonymous group of bigots. Leave it to the Brits to trash their own heritage to make a lame political statement.

Don‘t worry Netflix will put out a documentary to correct the historical record
