Not to pee in the pool, however, the better portrayal has to be Rocky (the original), hands down. More realistic, more gritty, and more believable. The problem with Rambo, for anyone who REALLY served in the military, is that there just isn't anyone like that. It's pure fantasy. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching the Rambo movies; great fun. But it's all pure fantasy.
Rumor was that David Morrell based Rambo on COL Nick Rowe. Rowe was a Special Forces officer captured by the Vietnamese and held for 5 years before he escaped. Rowe created SERE training as a result and was also instrumental to many anti-terrorist programs, particularly in the Philippines. Rowe was gunned down by Filipino terrorists in 1989.
