Sport is Valuable in Many Ways

Take a group of kids from a (very) inner-city environment - with all that implies, put them on a team in a (very) tough, competitive sport, and see what happens. Kids as different from one another as the most frightened "the races can't live together!" racist idiot could imagine will form lasting, sometimes life-long friendships. These friendships will be real and strong because they are based on things some kid sitting on his ass playing computer games couldn't imagine.

Give them a little time, and watch these young people grow more confident, strong, fit, diligent, respectful and responsible than they had ever been before. Behavior improves, grades improve, sometimes family relations improve.

Are there other ways for young people to grow and improve? Of course, but the above is powerful and impressive to observe.

And after only a matter of months, as 'diverse' a group of kids as you could imagine, who never traveled in each other's circles, are a tight knit group loyal to each other and close enough to joke with each other about literally anything.

All thanks to sports.
