I boiled ham shanks, one per person, in about three qts salted water. I added a small onion and about 2/3 cup diced carrot.
Covered and simmered for about an hour or more, added package of split peas, simmered for another you or so.

served with homemade yeast rolls.

Yummy.

I love ham hocks and split pea soup.

I dice some salt pork and fry it until it gets crispy. Remove the salt pork. Add water, ham hocks, a finely chopped onion a bay leaf and a bit of crushed rosemary to the pot and grease where you fried the salt pork. Sometimes a little garlic. Toss in the dried peas and let it all cook until the peas are mush and the hocks fall apart. Take the hocks out and take the meat off the bones. Put the meat back in the pot. When you serve up the soup, put some crispy salt pork on top of the soup in the bowls.

The name confused me, too.

Apart from that, how can one have pea soup without ham hocks/bones? The very idea is barbaric.
