Somewhere, James Buchanan is smiling

21 Jul 2021 ~~ By Dwight Weldman

Pennsylvania isn’t the “Mother of Presidents.” That title that goes to the state of Virginia, which gave birth to eight of our chief executives.
But the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania does seem to have the dubious distinction as the birthplace of arguably the two worst presidents in our history.
Until Joseph Robinette Biden shuffled onto the scene, Pennsylvania could only claim one U.S. president, and Franklin County was the birthplace of that president, James Buchanan Jr.
Buchanan was born at Cove Gap in Peters Township and is memorialized locally with a monument at his birthplace, “Stony Batter,” markers scattered around the area, and a school, highway and several businesses bearing his name.
Just as Nero was said to have fiddled while Rome burned, Buchanan’s cluelessness regarding slavery and his total inaction as seven southern states left the union made his presidency an unmitigated disaster.
~Snip~
Buchanan now has some stiff competition at the bottom of the list from our current occupant of the White House, Joe Biden, who was born in Scranton. Someone must have told Biden that Buchanan was the worst president, and ol’ Joe, not to be outdone, said, “here, hold my sippy cup!”
Now, to be charitable, Biden is getting up there, at age 78, so in my mind, it’s not sporting to pick on him over the things that happen to people of advancing age: forgetfulness, blurting out senseless gibberish (don’t all liberals do that?), lack of self-control, being bad-tempered or unsteady on your feet.
~Snip~
Biden hasn’t even served half of his term yet and has the country in a mess. Absolutely no one, including many of his former cheerleading squad who make up the legacy media, dispute that. The numbers don’t lie, whether they be poll numbers, economic statistics, the stock market, or the number of mothers lining up for baby formula.
Things are bad, and they are bad because Biden set out with a purpose on Jan. 20, 2021, to undo everything that his predecessor, Donald J. Trump, had accomplished during four years. Nihilism isn’t a good thing on which to base national policy.
Depending on what you may think is the motivation behind Biden’s actions, you can judge him on whether he’s been a total failure or wildly successful. If Biden set out to turn the United States into a marginalized, Venezuela-like socialist country, he is succeeding.
If he thinks his anti-fossil fuel, overspending, open-border, soft on crime, woke military and weak foreign policy positions will make America stronger, then he is failing.
~Snip~
Biden’s motivations aside, one thing is clear: If he gets his way, then America is toast. Fortunately, most Americans are now aware of that, and plan to clip his wings by giving Congress back to the Republicans in November.
There is even a theory that Biden’s own party’s “October Surprise” may be to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, giving us someone who is even less popular, Kamala Harris, as president. I don’t buy that theory, even though the Democrats have shown no hesitation to weaponize government to preserve their power.
Whatever happens, it seems that the position in last place of America’s 15th president, James Buchanan, is over and has been snatched away by Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.
“Requiescat in pace,” President Buchanan! I know that wherever you are, you are smiling.

Commentary:
Wow, reading this two years later makes me shiver. What did Weldman know then?
Indeed, Joseph Robinette Biden has surpassed the Weldman's expectations of Biden's failures.
Just stop and contemplate Joe's actions and reactions since July 2021. Afghanistan, Ukraine, massive inflation on all products in food, fuel, and housing, Supply side shortages, Russia, China and Iraq rattling their sabers, and now the attack on Israel by Hamas that's bringing us closer to World War III.
Surely there's a smile om James Buchanan's face and Jimmy Carter can now point a finger at Joe.

Well written piece

Buchanan gets a bad rap, unjustly so. He refused to start an illegal war, even though the Yankee Democrats were foaming at the mouth to start one, punishing the South for getting in the way of their massive govt. welfare programs for railroads and northern manufacturing interests. The only reason Lincoln won was because of the massive split in the Democratic Party itself. Out of 9 members of Lincoln's own Cabinet only one supported starting the war, his Postmaster General, a former Democrat.

Two men. Trump and Pence. Pence of God-fearing faith. Trump not so much. Which one did more for Christians with faith while the other just talked for decades? Reasons like this is why Trump is enemy number one. No wars. Trying to get NATO allies to pay their fair share. Trying to bring manufacturing back to our nation with real attempts at solutions instead of Joe's lying. Trump is the anti-globalist. You saw all of the politicians run to Ukraine. that was weird in itself. Now we have two wars. We know what Joe is.

You know where the term "globalist" comes from?

It comes from the far left radicals who used to go to the towns where WTO economic summits were being held and smash the windows of the local McDonalds and Starbucks.

I warned you all that Trump would lead you into the far left cave, but you didn't believe me.

As for the rest, Trump failed to pass a promised infrastructure bill.

He failed to repeal and replace Obamacare with something "beautiful".

He failed to build the wall, and he failed to get Mexico to pay for it.

He failed to grow the economy by the promised 4 to 6 percent.

He failed to achieve his promised $4,000 pay raise for workers.

He failed to eliminate the deficit as promised.

He failed to bring down drug prices as promised.

He utterly failed to drain the swamp, and enlarged and widened it instead, creating the most corrupt Administration since Harding.

He failed to provide maternity leave, as promised, to women whose employers didn't provided that benefit.

He failed to bring back coal jobs as promised.

He failed to release his tax returns as promised.

He failed to protect American steel jobs as promised.

He alienated our allies and sucked up to communist dictators and thugs.

He doubled the federal deficit.

He added $8 trillion to the debt in half the time it took Obama.

He widened the trade deficit with China and Mexico to record levels.

His far left protectionist tariffs cost Americans $34 billion a year, eliminated 300,000 jobs, and cost taxpayers $22 billion in rescue subsidies for farmers.

He blew off Covid as a hoax, and ignored it until it could no longer be ignored. He said Covid would magically go away and refused to enact testing and contact tracing, allowing Covid to spread completely unhindered at the most critical period in the beginning of the pandemic.

He spent more time golfing than Obama, despite saying he would "not have time to go golf" during the campaign. He spent nearly a third of his term golfing.

He lost the House, the Senate, and the White House. An achievement not seen since the last businessman president, Herbert Hoover.

And of course, he staged a coup when the American people kicked his incompetent game show host balls over the moon.

Worst. President. EVAH!

Worst. Sore. Loser. EVAH!

the literature of globalists I read in the 1970'ssays different. There are people who have power who have dreamt of this for centuries. Stop with your lies. Understand this. Life means nothing to them to achieve their goals. They also are now taking higher risks and must be careful enough to not initiate a global nuclear conflict.

The manner that you write seems wrong.
Prior to Lincoln's election Buchanan did little but appease or stop Southern States from seceding.
See more:

How was he going to stop them? As I said, it was his Party that divided over the tariffs and Homestead Acts and the Railroad Acts along regional lines. they didn't divide over the slavery issue, They divided over economic issues and the Republicans' adoption of the old Whig 'American System' agenda.

Correction: Southern states did not secede until AFTER the election of 1860.

And after Congress began writing up the Tariff Bills and the Homestead Acts. Dec. 20, 1860. Republicans took control of the Senate and the House as well as the White House.

Three times—in 1852, 1854, and 1859—the House of Representatives passed homestead legislation, but on each occasion, the Senate defeated the measure. In 1860, a homestead bill providing Federal land grants to western settlers was passed by Congress only to be vetoed by President Buchanan.

The Morrill Tariff was an increased import tariff in the United States that was adopted on March 2, 1861, during the administration of US President James Buchanan, a Democrat. It was the twelfth of the seventeen planks in the platform of the incoming Republican Party, which had not yet been inaugurated, and the tariff appealed to industrialists and factory workers as a way to foster rapid industrial growth.[1]

...

1860 election

The Republican Party included a strong pro-tariff plank in its 1860 platform and sent prominent tariff advocates touting the bill, such as Morrill and Sherman, to campaign in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where the tariff was popular. Both Democratic candidates, John C. Breckinridge and Stephen Douglas, opposed all high tariffs and protectionism in general.[7]

The historian Reinhard H. Luthin documents the importance of the Morrill Tariff to the Republicans in the 1860 presidential election.[8] Lincoln's record as a protectionist and support for the Morrill bill, he notes, helped him to secure support in the important state of Pennsylvania and neighboring New Jersey. Lincoln carried Pennsylvania handily in November, as part of his sweep of the North.

On February 14, 1861, President-elect Lincoln told an audience in Pittsburgh that he would make a new tariff his priority in the next session if the bill did not pass by his inauguration, on March 4.

Renewed Senate action

The second session of the 36th Congress began in December 1860. At first, it appeared that Hunter would keep the Morrill bill tabled until the end of the term in March.

However, in December 1860 and January 1861, seven southern states seceded, and their low-tariff senators withdrew. Republicans took control of the Senate in February, and Hunter lost his hold on the Finance Committee.

Meanwhile, the Treasury was in financial crisis, with less than $500,000 on hand and millions in unpaid bills. The Union urgently needed new revenue. A recent historian concludes that "the impetus for revising the tariff arose as an attempt to augment revenue, stave off 'ruin,' and address the accumulating debt."[9]

The Morrill bill was brought to the Senate floor for a vote on February 20 and passed 25 to 14. The vote was split almost completely down party lines. It was supported by 24 Republicans and the Democrat William Bigler of Pennsylvania. It was opposed by 10 Southern Democrats, 2 Northern Democrats, and 2 Far West Democrats. Twelve Senators abstained, including 3 Northern Democrats, 1 California Democrat, 5 Southern Democrats, 2 Republicans, and 1 Unionist from Maryland.[10][b/]

The slavery issue is just a myth invented after the war; Lincoln himself said it wasn't an issue he started it over.

Also see ....

From 1850 to 1871, the railroads received more than 175 million acres (71 million ha) of public land – an area more than one tenth of the whole United States and larger in area than Texas.[13]

Railroad expansion provided new avenues of migration into the American interior. The railroads sold portions of their land to arriving settlers at a handsome profit. Lands closest to the tracks drew the highest prices, because farmers and ranchers wanted to locate near railway stations.

Corporate welfare for railroads and land grants had already been implemented for the benefit of some northern states starting in 1850. It was such a money making scam on the public for politicians and railroads they wanted to pass yet another giant welfare bill for railroads.

Competition between speculators may have led to the idea of the distortion of railroad maps to emphasize one state, area, or line to the advantage of the advertiser. This idea, derived from the government land grant maps, may have been perpetuated by the mapping of the Illinois Central Railroad after it was granted land along its path in 1850. In John W. Amerman's book entitled The Illinois Central Rail-Road Company Offers for Sale Over 2,000,000 Acres Selected Farming and Wood Land (New York, 1856) appears an "Outline map of Illinois" which emphasizes the Illinois Central Railroad by a heavy black line, with stations placed evenly along the line to give the illusion of proximity of towns along the lines. This practice of manipulating scale, area, and paths of railroads became common practice in advertising maps of the 1870s and early 1880s and in railroad timetable maps.

And of course the Pacific Railroad Act was a major boondoggle, made a lot of Senators and politicians rich.

SC seceded in Dec. Buchanan decided to re-supply Sumter in January, prompting 4 or 5 more state to secede, the rest seceded after Lincoln's act of war and his rejection of a peace delegation over the 10% tariff the Confederacy had agreed on, which would have wiped out the western trade for the Union along the Mississippi with their 300% tariffs.
