That is politicians "planning" how the economy should be built from the bottom, laying a framework for it. If you truly want to get rid of socialism, the conservative stand point should be "we don't care if you kids go to school or not, its your choice, and we will not fund it at ANY level."
Also police, fire, and military is more socialism.

The Military is simply the military.

Right and you were born and raised that the military should be run by the government (and rightfully so), but that doesn't mean its the ONLY way to do it. When it comes down to it the military is one of the largest aspects of our economy. The government currently spends 5% of GDP on our military and employs millions of people directly in it. Further 10s of thousands of people are employed by people that are paid to build stuff for the military, particularly in the form of weapons.
But like with all things you have to consider the pros and cons of it. You could hire a company to run the military and employ the people and to buy the weapons, but you would be putting too much power into their hands and they could possibly take over the country from the inside. So in this case nearly every american is perfectly ok with the government controlling one of the largest sectors of our economy.

to give an example of how a military could be run by a company, you can look up the east india trading company. They were their own company that employed a fairly large military and conquered large amounts of land in india and ran that territory while claiming it on behalf of the british crown.
Or for a smaller more recent example, you could simply look at blackwater.
