The NSA, it seemed, had not told the public the whole story about Snowden's contacts with oversight authorities before he became the most celebrated and vilified whistleblower in US history.

Hundreds of internal NSA documents, declassified and released to VICE News in response to our long-running Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit, reveal now for the first time that not only was the truth about the "single email" more complex and nuanced than the NSA disclosed to the public, but that Snowden had a face-to-face interaction with one of the people involved in responding to that email. The documents, made up of emails, talking points, and various records — many of them heavily redacted — contain insight into the NSA's interaction with the media, new details about Snowden's work, and an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look at the efforts by the NSA, the White House, and US Senator Dianne Feinstein to discredit Snowden.

The trove of more than 800 pages [pdf at the end of this story], along with several interviews conducted by VICE News, offer unprecedented insight into the NSA during this time of crisis within the agency. And they call into question aspects of the US government's long-running narrative about Snowden's time at the NSA.

So the government's response to Snowden's evidence that they're lying is to lie even more. Naturally.

Is it alleged that Snowden should be treated as a hero because he punished the NSA by leaking documents when they wouldn't listen to his concerns about security? It's a ludicrous defense.

Nope. Merely pointing out that the government lied, again.

These efforts to contrive Snowden as some sort of ‘hero’ are unwarranted and disingenuous.

That he has escaped prosecution thus far does not make him ‘correct,’ nor does it ‘justify’ his alleged criminal acts.

And that he might be perceived as a ‘hero’ by some anti-government extremists and conspiracy theorists lends neither credence nor merit to his accusations.

If Mr. Snowden and is supporters believe what he is claiming is true, and the charges against him false, he should return to the United States to stand trial, where he will be afforded the presumption of innocence and his comprehensive due process rights, and the truth of the matter will be revealed for all to see.

You've managed to take deeply stupid to a new never before seen low. Congratulations

Where he will be dumped in a hole for months or years, like Chelsea Manning, before he even receives a trial, and his trial will be completely hidden from the public and he will not be permitted to make an actual defense. Furthermore, these documents show that he tried to go through the "proper" channels, and that the government, naturally, ignored him. It doesn't matter whether you think he's a hero or not, the fact is that he's a whistleblower who exposed government wrongdoing and now that government wants to throw him in a cage. He's better off avoiding these particular psychopaths.

With a justice system that let's a treasonous criminal like Hillary walk free and run for president. I wouldn't trust them either.

This crime syndicate that is your beloved "gubermint" has suicided hundreds for less than what Snowden did. I credit Snowden for waking me up as to what was really going on. I believed everything my "gubermint" told me but now I know that they couldn't tell the truth even if they wanted to. Yeah, Snowden has done a lot of good and I would stand up for him and millions of others would as well. Time to stand up against the cabal of crooks that are sucking the life out of this country. Morons like you live in a reality that doesn't actually exist.
