China says it’s entitled to about four-fifths of the South China Sea, based on a nine-dash line drawn on a 1940s map that loops down like a cow’s tongue to a point about 1,800 kilometers (1,119 miles) south from China’s Hainan island. The area overlaps claims from Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan.

Southeast Asian nations are worried about China building multistory mall-like structures on the Cuarteron and Gaven reefs, Philippine Defense spokesman Peter Paul Galvez told reporters in Manila last week. The Philippines is relying on diplomatic protests and arbitration to address China’s “blatant disregard” of a 2002 non-binding declaration of conduct in the waters, he said.

China has reclaimed land around Fiery Cross Reef to create an island large enough to enable its first airstrip in the Spratly Islands, IHS Jane’s reported Nov. 20, citing satellite pictures. The Spratlys are a collection of more than 100 islands or reefs that dot the southern South China Sea.

SINGAPORE: The Indian Navy sail training ship INS Sudarshini sailed into VivoCity for a port call on Monday morning (Mar 2), as part of a series of events to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and India.

The ship will be in Singapore from Monday to Saturday (Mar 7), said the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) in a news release.

During the port call, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini Commander T Raja Shakhar called on Commander Maritime Training and Doctrine Command Colonel Gerald Heng at Changi Naval Base, and visited the Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator and the Information Fusion Centre.

Separately, about 18 officers from the Republic of Singapore Navy will board INS Sudarshini for a day-sailing programme which will bring them on a round trip from VivoCity to Marina South Pier.

The Defence Ministry said the port call underscores "warm and longstanding" defence ties between India and Singapore. Both sides have been conducting annual bilateral exercises since 1994.

Following Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen’s official visit to India last August, the two defence establishments agreed to strengthen relations under the ambit of an enhanced defence partnership this year.
