Sheffield factory introduces ‘English language-only’ rule for European workers

The source said people have been asked to sign new versions of the company’s ‘Toolbox Talk’ working rules including the new policy, which was introduced prior to the recent referendum vote.

The worker said: “There was a ruckus in the factory, all the Polish people were talking about how they feel discriminated against because they were being made to sign it."

The new policy has been slammed as "unfair and discriminatory" and is said to be causing divisions between Polish and Slovakian workers and English employees.

However bosses at medical products factory Orchid Orthopaedic Solutions, in Sheffield South Yorkshire insists the policy was introduced as "a means to create harmony at work".

One English employee, who didn't wish to be named, said the policy is believed to be introduced after a staff member complained about Polish workers speaking to each other in their own language.

It's not particularly discriminatory as those EU workers can speak English properly if they try to do so. EU workers aren't Chinese labourers with no English. But chitchatting in their native tongues made English workers uncomfortable and isolated and the new policy is meant to create harmony in the workplace.
