Republicans for the most part are desperately trying to keep the government running and the Democrats for the most part are desperately trying to shut it down. That's the situation today.
Last night the Senate temporarily extended funding the government so that they would have the time to clear procedural hurtles that were thrown up by angry Democrats that felt blindsided by a provision that rolled back Dodd-Frank that were about to kick in next year. Even Harry Reid urged passage of the bill, but it appears that the fringes in both parties are angry because they felt their side compromised too much. Republicans are complaining, but they're not trying to shut down the government like angry self-serving Democrats are. Democrats see an opportunity to create another crisis and many like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Elizabeth Warren don't want to waste this opportunity to lie and prognosticate purely to appeal to their base.
I expect the Democrats to claim down the road that the do-nothing GOP is at fault here ... not themselves. This is the side-effect of a political party that has control of the media and feels they can literally get away with murder.
