Believe it or not, this is not true. For years advertisers have been telling the television industry that the demographics for viewers is much different than what the networks are catering to. They are catering to the 20 - 30 something age group yet it is the seniors that watch the most TV. We are not being given options that is why people aren't turning the channel. FOX News is a good example. Before we were finally given them as an alternative, the network new channels all had good ratings. Not because the viewers liked them, but because we had no options.
