The six candidates in the Feb. 22 election differ on whether an educator should be in charge of the nation's third-largest district and how the school board should be selected. They also offer their own visions for how to spur better test scores and reduce the dropout rate.
The leadership of the schools emerged as a campaign issue after a coalition led by the Chicago Teachers Union suggested changes to the 1995 state law that put control in Daley's hands, giving him the power to appoint the board.

At or near the top of the new superintendent's to-do list will be improving student achievement. Some 80 percent of the city's schools didn't meet federal testing targets last year.

While parents play a significant role in their children's education, Chico said they often lack the resources and knowledge to help their children succeed. Chico said he would create a "parent academy" for every school to serve as a networking, resource and education center for parents.
