I thought this would be a good place to introduce this topic. Last year, there were 10 billion dollars lost on Internet and phone scams in the US. This is what has been reported. The actually amount could be much higher. If you have been a victim or have run across Internet scams, here is a place you can share information and experiences.

Here are few things everyone should be aware of:
  • Assume any phone call, text, or email from a person or organization you don't know is a scam or spam.
  • If the person does not identify their organization and who they are, it is probably a scam. Legitimate businesses want you to know who they are. Scammers don't.
  • The best way to reduce scams and spam is to ignore the message, email or call. If you answer the phone or click on a link in a message or email, you are telling the sender that the phone number or email address is live; that is there is a person who will respond. That also means your phone number or email address will be shared with other scammers or spammers.
  • Never give any information to a person or organization you don't know, even something as innocuous as your name because it will likely end up in the hands of a data broker who collects personal information correlates it with other data to form profiles which are sold to other scammers and spammers and the public.
  • You should not answer or return calls from the area codes in the attached list. These codes are overlay area codes. They are area codes that have been overlaid by newer codes so they are no longer used. Scammers spoof these area codes to avoid detection.
