Ron Paul too old?

Enjoy your time in the reading room with all the young people who aren't interested in sex and partying, Grandpa. Don't forget to bring your pipe (no, not that one!).

Why do Republicans think that all their kids are interested about is sex and opium?

What kind of kids are you raising?

Essentially, Ron Paul wants to give parents more responsibility, but republicans are scared.

If Ron Paul does that, then all our children will be using drugs and posting on US Message Boards.

Yes he is too old. McCain was also too old when he ran.

Like it or not, most people over the age of 70 start to loose physical and mental capacity, some slowly and some faster, but it does happen. And frankly I do not want the worlds only superpower to be run by a man who easily "forget" where his keys are and to sipper up after taking a piss.

It was bad enough that the US was run by a man who had the beginnings of alzheimers and it was kept a secret for his whole second term, but allowing a man with one foot in the grave to run the worlds largest nuclear arsenal... no thanks.

Is today shuffleboard day, Grandpa?

And if you want to make it partisan, the liberal kids are probably worse.

Let's see these polls.

Well we can start with the Ames Straw Poll where he came in a close second. Not a scientific poll, of course, but certainly a good indication of who has the organizational structure to do well in Iowa.

Both of these polls put Ron Paul in third behind Romney and Perry.

Poll: Romney rocks, Perry pops, Bachmann doesn

Not to mention how well he does against Obama.

Obama 41%, Ron Paul 37% - Rasmussen Reports™

So is Ron Paul leading the pack? No. Does that mean he's unelectable? The fact that he's rising in the polls, and did very well at Ames should indicate that Ron Paul is indeed electable. Does that necessarily mean that he'll win? No. But Mitt Romney didn't win in 2008, are we going to argue that he was unelectable? I don't think so.

Third isn't exactly "ahead of the so-called "electable" candidates," is it?

Umm yes, it is.

Ron Paul too old?

Nope.

They tried to write him off as a nutcase 4 years ago. He is still here. The detractors long gone. Who were they anyway?

He was so nuts four years ago that candidates are tripping over each other to steal his ideas. Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich talking about the Fed? Michele Bachmann talking about reading Ludwig von Mises at the beach? Mitt Romney talking about getting troops out of Afghanistan? Of course they're all pale imitations, but the fact remains that Ron Paul has clearly made a mark on the Republican Party.

Did Mr. Paul invent any of those ideas or concerns? That's sort of silly.

And I'd like a link to Romney on getting out of Afghanistan, please.

Did he invent them? No, I don't think he "invented" them, but who has been talking about them for 30 years? Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry certainly haven't, and Mitt Romney in the debates four years ago was most certainly not talking about pulling troops out of anywhere. And of course Michele Bachmann learned about Mises from Ron Paul directly in his congressional meetings.

Likewise, Marc Thiessen is furious, and Danielle Pletka at AEI attacks Mitt Romney for saying we should be getting out of Afghanistan, saying “Romney has proven himself a little bit of a weathervane and I guess he senses that positioning himself in this place is good for his campaign — attempting to appease Ron Paul’s constituents without actually being Ron Paul.”

Situational Foreign Policy Realism, Ctd

It was in the first or second debate, I can't remember which specifically.

Here’s one more tidbit from yesterday’s interview: Asked whether his age would be a detriment to getting elected (he turns 76 tomorrow), Paul smiled and dismissed the hypothesis:

“That’s an old-fashioned idea. In this day and age, what really counts are your ideas and my ideas are promoting liberty – and that’s a very young idea and young people love it.”

He went on to challenge anyone worried about his senior-citizen status to a physical competition. “Anytime any other running candidate wants to come to Houston at 12 o’clock noon when the temperature is 100 and the humidity is 102, I’ll ride 20 miles with them on a bicycle.”

Any takers?

Gary Johnson might take him up on that challenge being a triathlete, but the rest? I doubt it seriously.

Yeah and 3 years ago progressives were claiming John McCain was too old.

He's still living is he not??

Ron Paul is sharp as a whip and makes "getting old" look attractive. How can such an "old man" accomplish so much? He is leading a "revolution" and much of this revolution comes from a younger crowd. People in their late teens and early 20's are enthusiastic about Paul and his message of liberty.

Ron Paul makes me opportunistic about getting "old". People in their golden ages can accomplish great feats and that is most heartening. The only other person who got me excited about getting older was Frank Lloyd Wright.

I don't see his age as an obstacle, I see it as something to embrace. I see him as a role model that we can all follow. You are never too old to defend your beliefs and make a positive difference on this world.

Give me a fuckin' break.

The late teens and early twenties types are enthusiastic about legal dope and hookers.......They just preach the other Ron Paul stuff in order to get to the legal dope and hookers.

Christ, ya' listen to the lot of them, and it becomes quite clear the majority of 'em are living in mommy's basement, trolling internet porn while sucking on a bong, and wondering why in the hell they can't get laid.

No, we don't.

Invent.. no, don't be an imbecile

What does the phrase "steal his ideas" mean to you?

Well as somebody that doesn't believe in intellectual property I don't think they actually "stole" his ideas, but I think you know what I meant.

[ my generation never had their goals on using heroin and buying hookers. Sure, some of us delved into drugs and practiced questionable sex. However, that is not what appeals to young people.

LOL! How the hell old are you? Oh yeah, young people hate sex and partying...they'd much rather sit around in plush armchairs wearing their smoking jackets stroking their beards and dwelling on today's pressing political matters.

Really Grandpa?

Wow.

As a 23 year old I "dwell" on today's pressing political matters.

Ron Paul is the only candidate that has a chance of actually getting Liberal support from those fed up with Obama. We need someone whos more in the middle right now. We don't need an extreme liberal or conservative if we're going to make any progress with Congress.

No we need someone like Paul.

Moderates will change nothing.

The problem with our country and economy is too much government intervention and not one democrat or "republican" will reduce government.

Only the libertarians will.

That's the only solution to the problem - otherwise you will be saying the same shit 4 years from now...

Ron Paul is certainly old enough that his health is a concern. If I were considering voting for him, I'd need to feel confident in his VP choice, as well. He may well live for many more years (my own grandfather is 103 and still going) but he is certainly an older man. When you consider the stress that must go along with the job of president, it's not something to ignore.

That said, I don't know if it's enough of an issue to sway many people away from voting for him. If there were a candidate very similar to him but younger, perhaps, but that doesn't seem to be the case with the major candidates, I doubt it will be much of an issue.

Don't mistake me. I support Ron Paul 100%

This is all BS. The same issue came up regarding McCain for the 2008 election and he's still going strong with no significant health problems.
