Florida Gov. Rick Scott Under Fire for Voter Registration

Florida Gov. Rick Scott's refusal to extend his state's deadline for voter registration in response to Hurricane Matthew is leading to fears that perhaps tens of thousands of Floridians could be kept from registering, potentially impacting the presidential race.

The deadline to register is Tuesday, but with 1.5 million Floridians under mandatory evacuation orders, the Hillary Clinton campaign had urged Scott to extend it. He declined.

Governor Matthew of Florida sits on God's throne and commands all royal lazy peasants to register to vote soon. No excuses!!!

Well shit happens when you wait to the last minute to take care of business. Are you seriously saying only voters for the hildabitch are finding themselves in this dilemma? If so, what's that say about them?

If you have not registered by now then you most likely were not planning on registering and using the storm to extend the deadline is not working with the Florida Governor...

What a douche bag, governor Skeletor is...

Yeah, because it is his fault that the storm came in and people were too lazy or too busy watching rerun episodes of the Walking Dead to get their lazy ass out to register to vote!

Go online like I did here in Texas, and do it and if not then cry me a damn river...

Speaking of lazy - you didn't bother reading the OP article did you?

If you had been more ambitious and read the article before commenting on it, you would have learned, compared to Democrats about ⅓ more "Republicans" and "No Party" voters registered in the 12 evacuated counties in FLA during the final week of registration in 2012.

or be like the Trump family and just be too stupid to register ...

Under these circumstances....you extend registration. The more voters you have the better. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

While a mandatory evacuation seems like a perfectly good reason to extend the deadline, calling this voter suppression is disingenuous at best.

Republicans never fail to take advantage of a disaster.

Rick Scott did all he could do to suppress the vote in Florida but-----but the ability to vote trumps Rick Scott's deplorable attempt.

Reversing Gov. Rick Scott, federal judge could reshape Florida election

Steve Bousquet,

TALLAHASSEE — The judge who extended Florida's voter registration deadline has two more chances to shape the election in the days ahead.

U.S. District Judge Mark Walker definitively placed his stamp on the 2016 vote Monday, even though federal courts were closed for the Columbus Day holiday.

Citing widespread turmoil caused by Hurricane Matthew, Walker ordered the state to accept voter registration forms for one extra day, through Wednesday, when he'll hold a hearing and decide whether to extend the deadline further.

<snip>

Think about it - Rick Scott ordered the necessary evacuation of 11 Florida counties, that was a good thing, but then-----but then before people could get back to their homes and get their lives back in some semblance of order Rick Scott chose to screw the very people he ordered out of their homes, out of their vote.

How long did people have to register to vote? How many days of potential registration were lost due to evacuation?

Like I said, a hurricane seems like a valid reason for an extension, but not granting an extension is a far cry from voter suppression.

Your take on voting and the laws protecting American citizens voting rights are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Judge Walker has ordered the state of Florida to extend voter registration thru October 18. Governor Scott's attempt at suppressing the vote is counter to American democracy but-----but I have to ask you...Why is it that Republicans do all they can to squelch American democracy?

Judge Mark E. Walker, of the US District Court for the Northern District of Florida:
"Hopefully, it is not lost on anyone that the right to have a voice is why this great country exists in the first place," he said.

Last week, Republican Gov. Rick Scott told reporters he didn't "intend to make changes," saying "people have had time to register."

"We'll now be able to make up for lost time and help register people whose lives were disrupted by the storm," said Pamela Goodman, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida. "Our goal is to help every Floridian register, vote, and be heard, and we're grateful that the storm did not silence their voices."

"Federal law requires the state to provide voters with enough time to register before the election," said Myrna Pérez, deputy director of the Brennan Center's Democracy Program. "With this extension, more citizens will be able to exercise their most fundamental right in our democracy.

I don't know why the governor didn't allow an extension on his own, nor do I know why "Republicans do all they can to squelch American democracy".

Why do you assume that the governor not making an exception to the normal rules of registration is voter suppression?
