In the chaos created in the wake of the Flux, the Sontarans invaded Earth, replaced the Russians and were fighting the British in the Crimean War during the 1850s. However, the Sontarans are discovered and expelled from the planet by the Doctor and her companions. They won’t make that mistake again.
The Sontarans have returned to Crimea, where they are hiding behind and directing their Russian stooges as they begin a new campaign to bring destruction to Earth. The war in Europe, combined with climate chaos and the coming U.S.-China showdown, will devastate the planet, and make Earth easy pickings for the Sontaran invasion fleet. It will be too late for the Doctor to do anything.
