I consider myself an Independant, but I vote for a variety of parties and candidates for various reasons. These people that I vote for, I don't care if they ever get elected, I want to be able to leave the voting booth knowing I voted my beliefs and conscious. I would be more curious to see who is a conservative, liberal, or moderate because those are beliefs and not just voting catagories.

Independent is a voting category???? OK, can I change my vote?

Liberals on this board routinely make 2 claims..... One is they are Moderates and the other is they are Independents. We have numerous threads going back years calling them out on their claims.

I didn't say anything about one party vs. the other. I just think it's hysterical that everyone here considers themselves independent.

Hint: If you're disenfranchised from one of the parties because they 'Act too much like' the other party? You ain't independent.

I'm sure there are more... But off the top of my head, I can only think of two who I'd consider truly 'independent'...

Oddball
JBeukama

Myself? No. I'm a Democrat; even though I've never registered as such, making me technically independent, it would be disingenuous to describe myself as such.

Oddball, I agree. JB, hmmmm maybe I'l read with a new perspective from now on.

And you can add me to your short list.

I don't think we've met. I shall PM you the 'Independent' litmus test. :)

Hang on! I think I'm backing off the Independent thing if it requires a particular subscriptive belief set. :)

Hmm, subscriptive isn't a word according to my Mac. Should be.

I believe voting "Independant" is just voting your beliefs, not parties.

Ah, I'm Independent again.

Though of course I can't vote, which maybe makes me an Independent Independent.

LOL, most independents are just embaressed Republicans.

I loved the jump of independent registrations from about 2006 to 2008.

the rest claimed to be libertarians.
But still think we should be the police force of the world.

I was one of those that jumped ship, but it was BECAUSE the Republicans think we should be the police force of the world which included striping the constitutional rights of Americans along the way.

lol! Sounds just like the Democrats. Not much difference between the two i guess. Kind of depressing. :(

True it does, but I didn't jump back to being a Democrat. I left them to become a Republican then realized the Republicans weren't any different than the Democrats and said screw them both. We'd be better off without any parties, but unfortunately there is no way to stop them from forming a party... at least not and remain the land of the free.

I honestly believe something has changed since 08. Ex Republicans make up this Tea Party. There is no crazy ultra democrat new fourth party.

You wouldn't call the "Green Party" crazy? Actually they came before the Tea Party so they would be the third party and the Tea Party would be the fourth.

Immie

You know, I forgot the Green Party used to exist. Or do they still exist? What is the test to see if they are a real alternative party or irrelevalant like a hypothetical White American Socialist Party which probably exists only in the basement of some house in Boston.

Independent since I realize the Republicans actually weren't better then the Democrats in 1992. I would never register with or identify myself with a party again because the inherent nature of parties is you start to compromise your principles for the good of the party in some way at some point and then selling out just gets easier and easier.

I don't know about this White American Socialist Party and not certain that I care to know anything at all about them.

What is the test? Not sure on the answer to that. For me, it would be can they get enough signatures to get on the ballots for any race they want to enter. Would that define them as a party?

Do they still exists? Didn't Nader run in 2008? I know he ran in 2004.

I'm not exactly certain that I would say that the Tea Party is a (I am going to get in troubleeeeee for this) party because they are really just a grumbling voice in the Republican Party.

Underaged or incarcerated?

And no, there's of course no mandatory criteria, nor do I have a 'Litmus test...' ;)

But it's my position that if you adhere to one party line on every. single. issue. (like 99% of the people here) Then you don't get to call yourself 'Independent!' (Like 70% of the people in this poll).

But that's just me.

I tend to agree with that last sentiment, though I think that's what they've become rather than what they were. I went to a tea party rally (July 2009) because, as a fiscal conservative, I had a concern about spiraling expenditure. I generally agreed with most of the speakers, though I thought there was a bit too much religious intrusion at a political event.

However, I'd never go to one now. The Tea Party movement seems, to my way of thinking, to have absorbed a myriad of additional positions (or had a myriad of different positions ascribed to it), and my attendance would be taken as support for those positions.

Pity.

And yet NOT a SINGLE Constitutional right of any American has been stripped and your buddies the Democrats keep re approving the EXACT same laws the Republicans ( with democratic help) passed. Go figure.

Ive been here long enough and Im still trying to figure out which way USMB leans. Or does it float this way and that? So....which party are you? Or none of the above (independent)?
And again..nobody can see how you vote, nor do you need to explain why.

I will state upfront I am independent. Ill vote Repub or Dem. Whomever I feel will do the best job gets my vote.

Would you name a few Democrats you have voted for?

BTW, it's "whoever" in the case you used it.

I am a Republican and I have voted for Democrats. A Senator from Washington State when I lived there and the local Sheriff of where I live now.
