The GOP relies way too much on the following:

Democratic incompetence at virtually everything.

Therefore they can get by with people like Bush the lesser as leaders., who except in foreign policy, was a pretty doctrinaire liberal/leftist.

Bush the lesser had the great and good fortune to run against Ds who had no executive experience and acted out while on the campaign trail.and one of his wins was a squeaker. Gore and Kerry were above average D presidential candidates.

This needs to be discussed..

Yeah losses without a competent or organized opposition is difficult but the GOP manages to pull it off with regularity.
