The revelation is the strongest sign yet that law enforcement was aware that Mr. Card was a potential danger before he carried out a rampage at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston on Wednesday night.


“The guys, from what I know, paid due diligence to this and did attempt to locate Mr. Card and they couldn’t,” Sheriff Merry said in an interview on Saturday night.

Earlier on Saturday, the commissioner of the public safety department said that Mr. Card had been paranoid and may have been hearing voices. The commissioner, Michael J. Sauschuck, suggested that Mr. Card had most likely been to the bowling alley and bar before, and may have carried out the attack in part because he falsely believed that “people were talking about him.”

“There’s paranoia, there’s some conspiracy theorist piece,” Mr. Sauschuck said.

During a recent visit to a National Guard training facility outside Peekskill, N.Y., Mr. Card had a run-in with officials and was later evaluated at a mental health facility, according to a senior law enforcement official. Mr. Sauschuck said he had no information to suggest that Mr. Card had ever been forcibly committed for mental health treatment.

Mr. Card had legally purchased several guns, including some days before the attack, according to Jim Ferguson, the special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ field division in Boston.

In Maine, officers must seek a medical professional’s opinion in order to take weapons away from people who are suffering mental difficulties and are considered a danger to themselves or others. That’s more stringent than some states with so-called red flag laws that allow the police or the public to petition for the temporary removal of a person’s guns.

No, dumb shit, he was already in a psychiatric facility and the Doctors stated he was hearing voices.....and the most important fucking part...........he told his doctors he wanted to do a mass public shooting....and they were concerned enough to inform his military Chain of Command and they were concerned enough to inform the police.....at that point, it was the duty of the police to get a judge to sign off on a court order to pull his gun.

They already had him in custody, he was already under care...so the state of mental health treatment in general in this country doesn't apply to this situation.

Well, obviously it was, since he got out, picked up a gun and shot 18 people.

Given you gun nuts sue any police department trying to enforce a gun confiscation, you can imagine the police being reluctant to do so.

So here's an idea. An Iron-Clad Red Flag law. ANYONE who says, 'Bob is dangerous," the police go to his house THAT DAY, and take his guns. Then it's up to him to hire a shrink to prove he's not a crazy person.

Just to make sure I understand. The Democrats are awful because they want to pass and use unconstitutional gun grabbing laws like the Red Flag things. They want to seize your guns. But the Democrats are awful because they didn’t seize the guns using these unconstitutional laws.

Easy.....He told his mental health professionals that he planned on doing a mass public shooting...therefore it would be a good idea to make sure the guy hearing voices, stating he wants to shoot people, and who is confined to a mental health facility doesn't have guns in his home....and considering he was a military firearms instructor....and his family was already in contact with the police?

Listening to morning news on the t.v..........a the shooter tried to buy a silencer at a Maine gun store before the shooting, and filled out the mandatory, Federal Background check form for the purchase. He checked the box about his 2 week commitment.....the owner of the gun store checked his form, saw that he had been committed to a psychiatric facility, and denied him the purchase.

The gun store did it's job....

The government did not do it's job.....it failed to confiscate the gun he already had under Maines Yellow Flag law....

The gun store didn't fail, the anti-gun god, "government" failed.

“He came in and filled out the form, he checked off a box that incriminated himself saying that he was in an institution,” Rick LaChapelle, owner of Coastal Defense Firearms, said. “Our staff was fantastic, let him finish filling out the form, and said, ‘I'm sorry, Mr. Card, we cannot give you this… at this point in time, we cannot release this silencer to you because of the answers that you've given us.”

LaChapelle added "we did what we were supposed to do and hopefully saved a lot of lives by the proper, just following the proper procedures.”

The police are largely protected by qualified immunity.
