U.S. Rep. Justin Amash notched a significant win in his fight to derail federal surveillance tactics after House GOP leaders agreed to allow debate on a measure he authored.

Amash, R-Cascade Township, tweeted Monday evening that the House Rules Committee ruled in order Amash's proposed change to a defense spending bill that would defund authorities' controversial phone records spying.

The vote on the Amash amendment should be today at some point. It defunds the NSA's alleged authority to engage in surveillance activities under section 215 of the Patriot Act. The Obama administration has come out against this amendment with this hilariously obtuse statement:

This blunt approach is not the product of an informed, open, or deliberative process.

Obama: Don't defund NSA surveillance

As if the Obama administration would know anything about an "informed, open, or deliberative process."
