Rebels Seize Syrian Army Base in a Blow to Assad

By ANNE BARNARDJUNE 9, 2015

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Insurgents seized a major army base in the southern Syrian province of Dara’a on Tuesday, the latest in a series of blows to government forces. But the victory was claimed this time by one of the few remaining rebel groups not dominated by hard-line Islamists.

Commanders of a coalition called the Southern Front of the Free Syrian Army, which includes elements trained and armed by the United States and its Arab allies, declared that they had seized the sprawling base in a six-hour lightning advance. That suggests that the group still has some bite, even as the Nusra Front, Al Qaeda’s arm in Syria, and its rival, the Islamic State, amass power and territory.

If it holds, the advance could invigorate Syrian insurgent groups that have increasingly been squeezed into irrelevance. Groups that once called themselves the Free Syrian Army have been caught in some areas between government forces and the extremist Islamic State, and, in other areas, operate with Nusra out of choice or necessity.

Poor Little Boy, the page didn't work. What was stopping him from using Google to read the news about the army base?

Following the Syrian conflict, even kind of closely, you've likely heard the news about southern rebels taking over the Syrian army base called Brigade 52, in the Daraa govnorate.

Right now it's all unconfirmed — Syria's state news channel Sana has so far been silent — but monitoring groups tell us a dawn offensive on Tuesday by Syrian rebels in the Southern Front ended in a takeover of the base and a retreat of Syrian regime forces.

The People of Sweida Triumph Over Militants on Two Different Fronts

"For the first time since January 2013, the Syrians of the Sweida Governorate are facing an existential threat from the horde of Islamist militants that have begun swarming their beloved land from the northeastern and western flanks, leaving the people of this historical province to mobilize and arm themselves in preparation for an imminent battle.

Despite the looming threat they face, the Syrians of the Sweida Governorate have not shied away or surrendered themselves to the Islamist militants at either of these volatile fronts; instead, they have decided to welcome their enemies to the battlefront like their ancestors did to the French Imperialist Army some 90 years ago.

However, as history reminds us, the famous commander of the Syrian Forces during the Great Syrian Revolt of 1925 – Sultan Basha Al-‘Atrash of Sweida – led his courageous soldiers against the better equipped and trained French Imperialist Army at the “Battle of Mazra’a”, resulting in a stunning and monumental defeat for the colonial forces.

The people of Sweida – donning their Sultan Basha Al-‘Atrash and Syrian flag patches – have joined their countrymen from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and National Defense Forces (NDF) at the Tha’lah Military Airbase, where they have repelled the militants from the Free Syrian Army’s 1st Brigade, Jaysh Al-Yarmouk, and the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra.”

Unfortunately for the Islamist militants, they did not expect this kind of resistance from the people of Sweida and the Syrian Armed Forces at the Tha’lah Military Airbase, as the latter units have repelled all of the rebel infiltration attempts; this includes the Islamist’s largest assault at the military airbase on Thursday morning.

Further north, the NDF has been joined by local Durzi militias from the village of Tarba to defend the northeastern countryside of the province, where a large contingent of militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) have launched an attack on the town of Al-Rashidah; this attack was also beaten back by the NDF and local militias, despite numerous infiltration attempts by the terrorist group."

Syria's Southern Front to renew effort to retake airbase

‘Targets’ achieved in curbing aircraft use; group’s advance across southern Syria has led to major government retreats

A spokesperson for the Southern Front group told Middle East Eye that losing the Al-Thalaa airbase in Sweida to Syrian government forces last week is not a defeat for the opposition group

“At the end of the day, our main target has been achieved, which was to stop the aircraft and stop aircraft activity,” said Major Essam al-Rayes, the group's spokesperson. “Now there is no artillery and there are no aircraft used by this airbase.”

Though the Southern Front seized control of much of the airbase on Thursday, it was reported by the Syrian Observatory on Human Rights that on Friday it had returned to government hands.

“There is a target to control the whole airbase, but that will depend upon the timing and the right time to attack and to get inside the airport again,” added Reyes.

Druze leader says Assad has put Alawites' future at risk

Walid Jumblatt insisted that Assad cannot be part of any solution to the Syrian crisis

Druze political leader Walid Jumblatt said on Friday that Syria's Bashar Al-Assad has taken Syria and the Alawite religious community, to which he belongs, to "destruction", Jordan's Al-Sabeel newspaper has reported.

Jumblatt's remarks came after an exceptional meeting with the Judicial Council of the Druze in Lebanon to discuss the attack earlier this week on Qalb Lawzeh village in Syria's north-western Idlib province. The veteran politician tried to calm the situation, describing the attack, in which Al-Nusra Front killed at least 25 Druze members on Wednesday, as an "individual" incident. He added that there would be no political solution for Syria with Assad, who "has taken Syria to destruction."

Allah Akbar, right? Nusra Sally can´t await it but...

"On Sunday morning, the militants from the Free Syrian Army’s “1st Brigade” – in coordination with Jaysh Al-Yarmouk and the Syrian Al-Qaeda organization “Jabhat Al-Nusra – attacked the Syrian Armed Forces and the Druze civil defense at the Tha’lah Military Airbase for the fifth time in five days, attempting to breach their frontline defenses at the southwestern perimeter of this base in the western countryside of the Al-Sweida Governorate.

Unfortunately for the enemy combatants, this assault resembled their previous four infiltration attempts, as the rebel contingents were unable to break-through the Syrian Armed Forces’ defensive barriers on Sunday morning, despite the fact they pounded the Tha’lah Military Airbase with over 100 mortar shells and rockets; this shelling was coupled with repeated attempts by the rebel militants to storm the southwestern perimeter’s entrance in order to secure a position inside this strategic base.

After engaging the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), the National Defense Forces (NDF), and the Druze militias in a series of fierce firefights, the rebel militias comprised of the FSA, Jaysh Al-Yarmouk, and Jabhat Al-Nusra were forced to withdraw their fighters from the Tha’lah Military Airbase, leaving the aforementioned rebel contingents with another unsuccessful day in Al-Sweida.

According to a military source inside the Al-Sweida Governorate, the Syrian Armed Forces and Druze militias killed over 25 enemy combatants from the rebel contingents, including ‘Oman Mohammad Ahmad Abu ‘Aoun (AKA “Abu Sufyan), Mohammad Ahmad Fadel Al-‘Eid, ‘Issa ‘Abdullah Al-Hariri, and Moussa Khaled Isma’eel Al-Dawoud.

The source further added that the Syrian Armed Forces and Druze militias are in full-control of the Tha’lah Military Airbase."

Retired Syrian General Mobilized Already 6000 Men And Women To Protect The Region

"To most Syrians, the name “General Nayaf Al-‘Aaql” brings back memories to the Lebanese Civil War, when the aforementioned leader of the Syrian Arab Army’s prestigious “104th Airborne Brigade of Republican Guard” fought off a powerful assault from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) at the Battle of East Beirut in the summer of 1982.

However, the General is not sitting idly in retirement; his ancestral home and birthplace – Al-Sweida – is now facing its greatest threat since the French Imperialist Army attacked the Syrian Forces – under the command of Sultan Basha Al-‘Atrash – at Jabal Al-‘Arab, during the “Great Syrian Revolt” of 1925.

As hordes of Islamist militants from the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Jaysh Al-Yarmouk, and the Syrian Al-Qaeda organization “Jabhat Al-Nusra” have begun to assault the strategic “Tha’lah Military Airbase” some ten and a half miles away from the provincial capital of Al-Sweida, General Nayaf Al-‘Aaql has once again found himself in high demand by his fellow countrymen.

The People of Sweida Fight Back

While Al-Sweida’s sons in the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) are spread across Syria, the need for a provincial defense unit has become even more imperative; however, who could mobilize and train such a unit so quickly?

The answer was easy: General Nayaf Al-‘Aaql.

Known for his cheerful and sarcastic demeanor among the people of Al-Sweida, the stocky General was known by his army peers as a tough and brilliant field commander that rarely left the frontlines; instead, similar to his future successor (Major General Issam Zahreddine), General Nayaf Al-‘Aaql was revered and beloved by his soldiers for his refusal to leave their trenches during the Battle of East Beirut.

So, it should come as no surprise that the retired General had no reservations about leading a provincial militia against the intruders from the FSA and Jabhat Al-Nusra in Al-Sweida.

The Battle of Sweida has Begun

Over the last five days, General Al-‘Aaql has been able to recruit 6,000 men and women to join his National Defense Forces unit that was specifically formed to protect the province from the Islamist rebels and the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) in the northeastern countryside of Al-Sweida.

Reports of more civilians joining the ranks of General Nayaf’s civil defense unit have begun to surface on Sunday, as throngs of supporters have chosen to stand their ground in the face of looming danger."

Syrian Armed Forces Route the Rebel Militants at Tha’lah Airbase

"Day six of the rebel offensive at the Tha’lah Military Airbase in the Al-Sweida Governorate got off to a bad start for the Free Syrian Army’s “1st Brigade” and their allies, as the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) unleashed a powerful aerial assault that destroyed a number of militant vehicles and alleviated the pressure on the entrenched soldiers from the Syrian Armed Forces and the Druze Civil Defense at the southwestern perimeter of the base.

Following the morning airstrikes from the Syrian Air Force, the embattled militants from the FSA’s 1st Brigade – in coordination with Jaysh Al-Yarmouk and the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” – conducted an assault on the southeastern perimeter of the Tha’lah Military Airbase, where they initially breached the Syrian Armed Forces’ defensive barriers before the Durzi militiamen reinforced the base and repelled the assault.

The six failed infiltration attempts to enter the Tha’lah Military Airbase has taken a toll on the Islamist militants, as the aforementioned has sustained an estimated 150 casualties; this number has steadily risen in the last three days due to the increased number of reinforcements from the local Durzi villages and the relentless airstrikes from the Syrian Air Force on the town of Al-Hirak.

According to a military source in Al-Sweida, the Syrian Armed Forces and Durzi militiamen reported 4 soldiers killed-in-action (KIA) on Monday, including the head of the Air Force Intelligence at the Tha’lah Military Airbase – Brigadier General Lu’ayy Al-Saalam – and two members of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP): Faisal Jawad Al-‘Atrash and Ra’ed Al-Musharif."
