My brother works for Union Pacific in Tx. Does anyone know if there is any chance of a layoff in the future? I haven't heard, just wondering if anyone has heard anything.
Thanks

Union Pacific is doing extraordinarily well, in spite of the recession. They have only one lagging area, automobile shipments, but they are reaping the benefit for having shunned too much intermodal freight and now ship mostly only necessities, coal, ag products, chemicals, and food. The only labor cuts coming at UP are cutting back on contract labor (i.e. the offshore stuff in IT mostly). CTX, BNSF and others are not so fortunate and depend on intermodal far more than does UP. Some layoffs in dispatch, and yard might be coming there.

Until cap and trade comes to pass, which will cripple the coal industry, giving the UP a lot less to haul. This scares the crap outta me, as I fix coal cars for a living.
