Question for Democrats re Free College Tuition

UMASS Amherst is $34k per year. Tuition + Fees. Massachusetts is the most blue state in the country. Every single member of Congress is a Democrat. Governor is a Democrat.

Why is the school so expensive? Should it not be free? GOP led states certainly went down their road on abortion, women’s rights (trans), border security and policing.

Why doesn’t MA make the college more affordable or even free? And set the standard?

Edit: since Leftists are so literal. It’s $35k including Food and Housing Fees, mandatory for 1st year students. Subsequent years students may live off campus and buy their own food, that isn’t free either.
