Putin will move into Iraq after securing Syria. Putin is intent on controlling the oil rich Middle East. He has the blessings and backings of Iran who has just received billions of dollars freed up by the Iran Nuclear deal. Russia will enable Iran's nuclear program.

Why should Americans care, even if you are right?

Putin may be a tyrant, but he is not stupid...meaning he is not infected with political correctness or the foolishness that is climate change, unlike our fearless leader. I suspect he knows trying to possess a Muslim nation is nothing but a loser. Syria for decades has been:
- A very reliable 'customer' and ally to Russia
- A pipeline for funneling money and weapons to HAMAS to use against Israel

Were I Bush, wanted to send a message to Iran and Saddam Hussein (to quiet him down), especially knowing Syria was a 'sanctuary' nation for Extremists well, and was FORCED to pick a country to 'take out', instead of invading and taking down Iraq I would have done so to Syria.
- Hussein would have gotten the message we are not to be trifled with and would have calmed down some.
- Hussein would have been left to continue to oppose and keep Iran in line as they had been doing.
- Russia's 'toady' would have been eliminated.
- The pipeline of cash and rockets/weapons to Hamas would have been severed.

...but that's all neither 'here not there' now...

What 'killed' the Russians in Afghanistan was the unbelievable horrendous terrain, fighting local fighters who knew that terrain extremely well, and the weapons provided by the US to those fighters. The Russians do not face those same type of conditions in Syria. Not saying they still will not have a difficult time, just that they will face an easier 'problem set' this time.

What 'killed' the Russians in Afghanistan was the unbelievable horrendous terrain, fighting local fighters who knew that terrain extremely well, and the weapons provided by the US to those fighters. The Russians do not face those same type of conditions in Syria. Not saying they still will not have a difficult time, just that they will face an easier 'problem set' this time.

Actually, the conditions in Syria will be more difficult than those they encountered in Afghanistan. For many, many reasons. Also, Russia is already economically stressed. I'm not sure Russian citizens are as accepting of endless military actions as American citizens are.

Good point, but Putin is still an Ex-KGB officer who RULES, not runs, Russia. He openly admitted in an interview several years ago that the biggest mistake his country made during his lifetime was losing control and allowing the USSR to disband and that he wants to correct that mistake.

I don't think Putin would handle a march in Moscow demanding troops leave Syria very well....but that's just me.

All he has to do is send some of his thugs incognito into Saudi Arabia and blow up one little oil field...and watch the rise in the price of oil as everybody Shits...that will pay for most or all of what he does..and boost the Russian economy in the process.

Putin needs to do two things while the Pussy in the White House is still there:

1) Collapse NATO, and

2) Get the price of oil up as high as possible.
