Of course Russia was occupying Crimea, it was theirs due to the lease agreement until 2042. It’s been the home of the Russian Black Sea Fleet since the 1770’s.

After the Russians had conquered the Crimea in a longer process from 1770-1800 they brought German, Italian, Greek, Bulgarian and Russian seddlers to the Crimea while or because the most Crimean Tatars fled into other Turkish regions. The Russian seddlers mostly had been Zaporozshky Cossacks - or with another word: Ukrainians!
