A bill proposed by Indiana Congressman James E. Banks could change the way military families fund their children’s private education.

H.R. 5199, or the Education Savings Accounts for Military Families Act of 2018, would allow parents to establish savings accounts for their children’s private education using Federal Impact Aid. Federal Impact Aid is meant to offset the impact on a local tax base that is caused by having large amounts of federal land, such as military bases, in a district.

If approved, the bill would also allow people up to 22 years old and in college to use Military Education Savings Accounts. The money could also be used for private preschools.

The amount each child receives would depend on whether they live within the boundaries of a public school district that is considered heavily impacted by military presence. Children in heavily impacted districts would receive $4,500 to start their Military Education Savings Account; all others would receive $2,500.

I think this is going to cause funding issues.
