Why not? We did it after WWI and it gave new immigrants time to become assimilated in US society. The halt allowed long-standing differences to heal and let newcomers become part of the melting pot.

IMHO, until the Divider-in-Chief leaves office, we will not have a chance for the most important assimilation of all – the current schisms within American society among racial groups.

We've had big immigration fluxes from South Vietnam and Cuba where there has been a great deal of adaptation to our culture. But, will this influx from the Middle East work as well?

Graham is an idiot, bigot, and demagogue.

His fear of immigrants is both ridiculous and unwarranted, it's repugnant to our fundamental principles as an immigrant Nation, and it isn't very 'Christian.'

As the president correctly observed:

'And the biggest irony of course was -- is that those who betrayed these values were themselves the children of immigrants. How quickly we forget. One generation passes, two generation passes, and suddenly we don't remember where we came from. And we suggest that somehow there is "us" and there is "them," not remembering we used to be "them". On days like today, we need to resolve never to repeat mistakes like that again.
[...]
We must resolve to always speak out against hatred and bigotry in all of its forms -- whether taunts against the child of an immigrant farmworker or threats against a Muslim shopkeeper. We are Americans. Standing up for each other is what the values enshrined in the documents in this room compels us to do -- especially when it's hard. Especially when it's not convenient. That's when it counts. That's when it matters -- not when things are easy, but when things are hard.'

Unfortunately, there are far too many on the right, far too many 'Christians,' who have fallen prey to their unwarranted fear and hate, who have forgotten our values as Americans, and who now seek to deny to new immigrants the opportunities their own immigrant families once enjoyed.

Many frightened conservatives are truly sad and lost – such as the likes as 'preacher' Graham.

c-c-jones - you, sir, are an idiot. It's not a matter of so-called "values" it's a case of natural security - and unity.

We went through a 35 year period where no immigrants were allowed and it gave us a time for newcomers to adjust to and join our society.

Obama is doing his best to destroy this nation by allowing in a group of people with the avowed goal of changing how our entire society works. He basically wants the USA to be like the rest of the world, especially the mud pit called the Middle East

and we're supposed to listen to a bigot just because he's a reverend?

Graham is an evil human being. This further cements my support for immigration and accepting refugees.

As the "sage" prophet of the American Right, Graham might have been more effective if he had grown a long beard, donned a white robe and armed himself with a Shepard's Crook before making his "holy" announcement.

The "give them time to assimilate" line is BS and already worn-out. We have always had immigration and new immigrants have always assimilated without need for a 'time out.' The argument is specious and false.

Mebbe we could use some o' the old army barracks...

...on shutdown bases...

... to set up a reservation system to hold the ones we already got...

... an' build an island like China doin'...

... to hold the ones dat ain't here yet...

... to show dat dey ain't terrorist-crazed jihadis.

It should have happened before this. Several times in our history we have had moratoriums on immigration and we weren't even importing terrorists interested in mass casualty attacks.

This is pretty ridiculous, actually. Trump's 'crazy' proposal keeps it real about what the real problem is and puts forward a solution that cuts our nails not our whole hand.

We are no more of an "immigrant" nation today than any others. Today we are mostly a nation of American citizens. It's not about fear and hate but fewer jobs and resources to accommodate many more foreigners. Every country in the world should have the right to end or limit immigration if they so choose without earning those stupid bigoted and racist labels. Their citizen's needs should be met first.
