Pope says unfettered capitalism is "the dung of the devil"

Well, Frank, unfettered anything is the dung of the devil. Don't abandon capitalism...work to fetter it fairly and appropriately. The left is more than prepared to throw the baby out with the bath water. Not the solution...just ask the Greeks.

Who gives a flying fuck what the pope says?

A few Billion people thats all
Not really

there are only about a billion Catholics and more than half of them live in third world countries as did the pope who is illustrating his third world thinking

He's from Argentina, wasn't he paying attention?

You would think......but do left/statists ever pay attention to the truth, reality or right and wrong.....as Dennis Prager points out, Christians are being murdered all over the world...and he prattles on about global warming.....

This Jesuit Pope is the enemy of true Christians throughout the world. The more Christians removed from the earth the easier it is for him to hide the fact he himself never was one. In my opinion he is the most dangerous man on the earth today. He is the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. Those in front of him do not realize how evil he is - their guard is down - and therein he is most dangerous. The Jews need to keep this man out of their country. (totally) We need to do the same here in America. He is up to no good and cannot be trusted..

The new pope is a left wing, latin American socialist...who has no clue about how a successful economy works and how to lift the poor out of poverty.....

Where has unfettered capitalism lifted the poor out of poverty?

When has there ever been unfettered capitalism?

Where has unfettered capitalism lifted the poor out of poverty?
When has there ever been unfettered capitalism?

Pretty close during the horrors of the early Industrial Revolution in places like Britain.

...or maybe you could comprehend that he's talking in a relative sense, unless that's too nuanced for you.

I don't waste my time pondering the thoughts of third world religious leaders

And we haven't had anything in common with the industrial revolution in the pope's lifetime

And you say conservatives like to live in the past

Clearly this is rhetorical.

Capitalism is the most efficient economic system, capable of creating great wealth, it is far superior to all other economic systems, and will never be replaced as such.

But capitalism is not perfect.

Consequently it’s perfectly appropriate and warranted to enact necessary, proper, and in the United States, Constitutional regulatory measures to countervail the adverse effects of an imperfect system such as capitalism.

A pragmatic approach is always best, adhering blindly and exclusively to one type of economic system is foolish and wrongheaded.

So in essence the Pope is correct, a ‘pure capitalist’ system not mindful of the negative aspects of an unbridled, unregulated free market is reckless and irresponsible.

RonaldTheSocialistReagan would fit right in with the socialist conservatives today. His socialist agenda is right up their ally.

Time, my brothers and sisters, seems to be running out; we are not yet tearing one another apart, but we are tearing apart our common home. Today, the scientific community realizes what the poor have long told us: harm, perhaps irreversible harm, is being done to the ecosystem. The earth, entire peoples and individual persons are being brutally punished. And behind all this pain, death and destruction there is the stench of what Basil of Caesarea called “the dung of the devil”. An unfettered pursuit of money rules. The service of the common good is left behind. Once capital becomes an idol and guides people’s decisions, once greed for money presides over the entire socioeconomic system, it ruins society, it condemns and enslaves men and women, it destroys human fraternity, it sets people against one another and, as we clearly see, it even puts at risk our common home.

Despite the progress made, there are factors which still threaten this equitable human development and restrict the sovereignty of the countries of the “greater country” and other areas of our planet. The new colonialism takes on different faces. At times it appears as the anonymous influence of mammon: corporations, loan agencies, certain “free trade” treaties, and the imposition of measures of “austerity” which always tighten the belt of workers and the poor. The bishops of Latin America denounce this with utter clarity in the Aparecida Document, stating that “financial institutions and transnational companies are becoming stronger to the point that local economies are subordinated, especially weakening the local states, which seem ever more powerless to carry out development projects in the service of their populations”. At other times, under the noble guise of battling corruption, the narcotics trade and terrorism – grave evils of our time which call for coordinated international action – we see states being saddled with measures which have little to do with the resolution of these problems and which not infrequently worsen matters.

Similarly, the monopolizing of the communications media, which would impose alienating examples of consumerism and a certain cultural uniformity, is another one of the forms taken by the new colonialism. It is ideological colonialism. As the African bishops have observed, poor countries are often treated like “parts of a machine, cogs on a gigantic wheel”.

:eusa_clap:
Someone needs to start the global discussion, why not the pope.

No such thing as "unfettered" capitalism.

The question is establishing and maintaining efficient, flexible and effective regulations without mitigating the dynamic effects of capitalism to a net negative degree.

But clearly that notion isn't partisan enough, so we'd better not discuss it, you betcha.

:rolleyes-41:

There are pockets of unfettered capitalism in the financial markets. OTC derivatives as an example, though Dodd-Frank is beginning to address them. The repo market is another, repo is where the implosion of the financial system took place after the housing bust. Unfettered just means that business interests have no need for regulations in building their empire.

Yes, and that's why I included the word "flexible". Derivatives and repos still run rampant, and the worst examples of weak regulations were (1) allowing AIG to write limitless credit default swaps without reserve requirements and (2) somehow not knowing that the credit agencies were getting away with issuing AAA ratings on CMO crap. Both of which played a significant part in the Meltdown. Regulations have to be far more flexible and adaptable without creating too much drag.

This good Pope is the friend of true Christians throughout the world. In my opinion those who oppose him are the most dangerous people on the earth today. They are the hidden wolves ravening the flock. The Jews rightfully see Francis as their friend. So do all Americans who claim and know Jesus as their God. Those who opposed him are up to no good and will betray mankind.

No, he's not. He's a shithead.

The Pope is a good man. Those freak sects on the loony fringe far right are simply suffering butthurtitis.

Because the Pope called out unfettered capitalism, he smells like a rose.

Those who disagree are the dung heads.
