Will polygamy ever be legal in America?
Should polygamy be a reason to deny someone permission to immigrate to America? Do they have to be willing to break up their family to immigrate? What if they're refugees from some horror ... should they have to choose between death and dissolution of their marriages?
Here's something interesting. I was working in Salt Lake City earlier this year, and while working with some community agencies, learned that there is a large population of SOMALI REFUGEES who are living as polygamists in Salt Lake. Utah has a rather storied and conflicted past with polygamy, and it's challenging a lot of the pre-existing notions about tolerance.
I think there are about 30,000 FLDS (Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints) polygamists presently in Utah. They are disavowed by the LDS Church itself, but there are a ton of them. MOst have not been prosecuted, they live largely separate lives from the mainstream population in Utah (Big Love mythology, aside). However, having a couple of thousand African polygamists in the community has added something new to the mix.
Hilarious, to be honest.
