This is pretty astounding folks - a clear indicator of the rising tide of discontent that will be washing over the DC political system come the November elections.

CNN Poll: Majority says government a threat to citizens' rights

Fifty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday say they think the federal government's become so large and powerful that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens. Forty-four percent of those polled disagree.

The survey indicates a partisan divide on the question: only 37 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of Independents and nearly 7 in 10 Republicans say the federal government poses a threat to the rights of Americans.

the poll says that 7 out of 10 republican rightwingnuts thinks the government hurts liberties...

unless of course those same rightwingnuts are talking about a husband's right to take his wife off of life support...

or the right of gays to marry...

or my dominion over my own body.

yeah, who's the threat to liberty?

Government, no matter the size, always poses a threat to personal freedom.

Nice deflection...so nearly the same number of Independents and over a third of Democrats feel the same way.

They must be "wingnuts" too?

The majority of Americas have grown sick and tired of the ever intrusive federal government taking and taking and taking with less and less to show for it.

November 2010 is gonna be a BIG reset election.

Nice to see people are finally starting to wake up.

Washington (CNN) – A majority of Americans think the federal government poses a threat to rights of Americans, according to a new national poll.

It will get worse.

Of course it is. More & more people just want the Government to get off their backs and out of their lives. The Government is just doing too much at this point. I believe Congress should only meet a couple times a year. They are is session far too often. I mean how many new Laws do we really need? It's to the point where when Congress goes away on Recess, the people take a big sigh of relief. The Congress now causes so much dissension and division in this country. They should just meet less often. I know the Socialists hate this idea but i really do believe i'm right.

The Government doesn't have all the answers and actually creates most of the serious problems in the end. Basically they create all the problems and then attempt to fix those problems. More & more people are agreeing with me on this but i'm afraid things are going to get much worse though. Too many Americans believe that the Government will take care of them and solve all their problems. That is very sad and dangerous thinking. It's time to limit our Government's power & control. Unfortunately i see Third World Misery ahead for this nation if we continue down this Socialist road. I guess we'll see where it all ends up though. Time will tell.

Our founding fathers knew government was, and is, always a threat to the freedom of the citizens.
That's why they wrote the constitution, the federalist papers, the bill of rights, and created the system of checks and balances to protect the people from the government.
the people, in the united groups known as states, created the federal government, not the other way around. The federal government was described as a necessary evil by our founding fathers for a reason. The truths that they held as 'self-evident' are as true now as they were then.

All true - and it would appear that most Americans would agree according to this latest CNN poll.

"Just get off our backs!" I think that's what most Americans are screaming at this point. The Government is just doing too much.

Having once worked in the timber , mining , and commercial fishing industries , all of which have been legislated near to death , I would say the government is not only intrusive , but nuts . Not only were huge rural industries decimated , but also urban industries . We got all or blocks , tackle , tools and machinery from American manufacturers . When your life depends on your gear , you don't use cheap Chinese crap . Not only is the government intrusive to personal freedom , they also do everything within their power to limit prosperity on a national scale . The methodical shut - down of industry in this country has been going on since at least the mid 70's and has been presided over by BOTH Republican and Democrat administrations . They're BOTH taking us to the same place , they're just fighting over who gets to drive .

But here is the real question to be answered. If we had a Republican president right now, would those seven out of ten Republicans still have answered the same way?

I would like to see everyone vote for the ONE thing that the government does for them personally that they would like to see go away...or at least, have the government stop doing it.*

Then, anything that gets more than, let's say 100,000 votes, gets dropped...the government lays off anyone that has to do with that thing (let's say FDA inspections) and let the free market deal with it.

* It has to be something they personally benefit from.

If the dem congress is so animated about how healthcare is for the American people, why won't they put it out for a national vote, to prove the repub congress is wrong?
