Moped crime in London is down by half thanks to this new police tactic

The UK is no stranger to violent crime. Gun crime exists, moped crimes exist, murders exist, rape exists. There is nothing Utopian about the UK.

What seems to be different from the UK to a generalized view of the US is that the UK tackles its problems.

Gun crime increased massively in the 2000s. The UK govt and the police then set about tacking the problem.

In 2002 there was a high of nearly 100 gun murders (the equivalent of 500 gun murders in the US a year). By the time the Labour Party was kicked out of office in 2010 that figure was down to 40 gun murders, more than 50% reduction.

Last year there was a big issue with moped gangs committing crimes.

This has been halved in a year.

"Uniformed ‘Scorpion’ officers are now authorised to hit riders with their own vehicle to unseat them, a move which has helped police achieve a 44 per cent drop in moped crime across the capital since October last year."

"Police say that from January to October this year there were 12,419 such offences across London, down from 19,455 during the same period in 2017."

"Moped thefts in the capital were also down from 12,192 to 8,261 – a reduction of 38 per cent."

However in the US it seems that such big change isn't often the case as the police struggle to deal with a lot of problems.

The video in the article is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen. The London police are allowed to ram a moped, sending the perp flying. They must be having so much fun with that.

Rates of assaults on police in the UK is double that of the 'ultra-violent' US.

I did a paper on this for my police academy course.

Cops in the US shouldn’t have guns either. Clearly many are not properly trained to use them.

Well, to be honest, being a cop in certain parts of the US must be very stressful. The big difference between being a cop in the UK and the US is that in the UK, the cops know they'll basically go home for dinner that day.

Which is one of the reasons why they need better training.

I'm more for the, they need more help from other sections of society. Like, not having guns. Having better education. Having better job opportunities, having a chance.
