Police officer uses "civil forfeiture" to take all of the money out of a hot dog vendor's wallet

The police have no right to go through your wallet

Sure they do.

The man was selling goods without a permit. He was taking money from people. That money is evidence/proceeds of the crime. If he saw the man putting the cash in his wallet... boom.

Forfeiture laws are ridiculous anyway....an invitation to police corruption

For a misdemeanor like not having a vendors license. A ticket and a fine should suffice

Why would they show up to pay the fine?

In Arizona, or some other states, a lot worse would be happening here.

He did not have a sales permit.

He was not a real a vendor. He was a poacher.

He was taking money away from the real venders who followed the rules and got the permit. Think about it, you follow the rules, pay your fees, and then someone else poaches customers off you -- how would you feel?

Like the person selling counterfeit t-shirts outside the concert, it's against the law. You're stealing money from the business operating inside the venue, as well as violating copyright law.

In this case, does the money they took even cover the court fine? The guy probably won't show.

There are very scary instances of highway patrol in Texas and other states doing some really nasty things with forfeiture--taking peoples money etc. The FBI investigated.

This is a cop following the law.

That cop is a thief. Asset forfeiture laws violate the 5th Amendment. End of story.

If it is 'evidence'- and used for a 'conviction'- and the law provides for confiscation of proceeds from illegal sales- okay.

But if it is just taken away, and the man is never 'convicted' of any crime- then this may be legal- but it isn't right.

UC Berkley...? Nothing surprised me...
This is nothing new. It is an artifact of the failed War on (some) Drugs, where cops began seizing property, cars, boats, cash, etc from suspects without even going to trial. The victims of this police overreach have to go to court to prove their property's innocence. It is a major source of funding for police. Not a liberal or conservative thing - it has been perpetuated for a long time over many administrations.

Yet Jeff Sessions is going all out to expand the use of Asset Forfeiture laws.

You can thank Trump for that.

(and yes- I think Asset Forfeiture without a conviction is wrong)

Yet you believe in ridiculously big gov. When the government gets too big corruption is the consequences.

Actually, our forfeiture laws were an outgrowth of the War on Drugs....a Conservative favorite

War on drugs is a expansion of government

The war on drugs is a failure, it created a huge black market and criminal gangs, something our Pols should have known given the impact and example of alcohol prohibition.

Now that idiot Attorney General wants to double down on MJ enforcement. The cost deficit of enforcement - arrest, detention, trial, attorney fees - far out paces the revenue which could be used to provide treatment rather than punishment for drug and alcohol addicts.

Calling it a war is the problem, as that implies the desire for an outcome or victory.

Drug cartels are a big part of the Mexican economy. As well as border states.

The "Drug War" includes enforcement officers and agents at all levels, jailers, court personnel, and the billion dollar rehab business -- millions of Americans are employed, get a paycheck, and put that money back into the economy.

And not to be cynical, but the drug war casualties cuts the population surpluss--not as effectively as real wars, but still.

If we brought in the U.S. Military and intelligence and wiped out the cartels-- made it a real war, shock and awe style... then millions of Americans would be out of jobs when the drugs stopped flowing. There would be a wave of suicides and crime, addicts robbing pharmacies etc.

Kill the supply. Jail the hopeless addicts. Then what?

The economy of the drug war works -- not saying this is morally right. It is what it is.

Legalizing pot, fine. Legalizing meth, crack, H? What are you, high? You would increase the addict population and the crimes associated with addicts desperate to support their habits. Not to mention millions of innocent children put in jeopardy with all the new addict parents.

It's a sick cynical way of managing society as we transition to into the robot and automation age.

Wonder if that guy speaking would be saying the same thing if that was a white guy selling hotdogs?

Oh Danny...four in ten of your Mexican Nationals are on welfare and need access to my checking account to eat compared to one in ten White Trash "US Nationals".
Why do you LefTards continue to believe that laws aren't made for you to follow?

Laws are made to control criminal activity, which can, do to time and place, include hate speech, so the question to you is:

Who or what made you into the criminal your are?

True...criminals sell shit without permits. It's just another way the human cockroaches fuck over REAL Americans....but you love that...you're happier when Gustavo is able to buy that Modello and new pit bull....you don't want to protect REAL Americans and American owned businesses.

Americans who hire young men outside of Home Depot, or who own small and sometimes very large businesses, hire employees who, by law, are not employable. These Americans can pay the many hard working men and women under the table and avoid paying payroll taxes.

Without these criminals the hard working and mostly Asians and Latino/Latina workers, who lack green cards, would not be able to come to the US to work.

Face this fact and demand that Trump and Sessions stop the racist attacks, and begin to put Americans who hire these people seeking a better future into the CJS; jail them, then put them on probation until they pay restitution to SS and medicare for their law violations.

Your post kinda has that "if you leave your keys in your car you deserve for it to be stolen" sort of feeling.
Look, no doubt employers should be hanged for hiring illegals...but tell me this; what about the Cockroaches that provide phony documents or the documents of a barely American family member?

a. Counterfeiters of documents should be arrested and if found guilty serve a prison sentence, and upon parole be supervised by an agent for life; if a non citizen is so arrested and convicted, they should be imprisoned and any property they own within our country should be confiscated and sold for the their keep, upon their release they should be deported with only the clothes on their back.

b. What is a "barely American family member"?

I'll play along...
You know that guy that throws his empty Bud Light cans and dirty diapers out the window of his uninsured beat-up piece of shit old Datsun pickup...that guy who speaks some odd jibber-jabber and can't string a full sentence of English together....that guy quick to wave a Mexican flag on our soil....an anchor baby....He's an AINO...American In Name Only....That's your Barely American....get it now?

Of course not....illegal Mexicans have a free pass here...our laws do not apply to them...just ask any LefTard.

Let me know when you find anyone who says that all laws don't apply to illegal immigrants.

Illegal aliens have no constitutional rights, and should be treated as such…

Funny how the left claims to care so much about these poor immigrants just trying to make a living while they are here on video robbing one blind

How do we know the man is illegal?

Na, until they are citizens they have no right to anything… At least that's the way it should be

When you say "should be", it means you admit they have constitutional rights. You just don't like the idea.

All those saying the cop had a right to pilfer that guys wallet would be singing a different tune if it happened to their own wallet.
