planning for the inevitable

We are all doomed, doomed I say.

By the way? If we quit using electricity and oil to create it, how long do you think 6 billion people will take to die out, what effect do you think THAT will have on the world?

Try burning some wood and see how much smog you get from that then imagine 6 BILLION people doing that.

No coal, no oil, guess what? Almost no electricity. I believe in the US only something like 30 percent of our Electricity comes from sources other then natural gas, coal and oil/gasoline.

There is no real evidence man is the major problem in the SLOWLY rising temperatures and every reason to believe that it is simply another cycle of NATURE.

I think only about 4.5 billion would die out quickly, within a year, the primitive tech folks on the other hand would do pretty well. Until the next drought came along then most of them would die out too. Figure within 5 years the human population would be around 300 million worldwide. And the planet would be a disaster.

Fyrenza,

No sane person thinks otherwise. There is absolutely no doubt that mankind does incredible damage to his local suroundings. The problem is by wasting (and that is quite literally what we are doing) precious resources (money) on AGW "research" we limit the amount of mitigation and repair that would otherwise be possible.

The AGW proponents steal money away from people who ARE doing research on technologies and practices that actually would help eliminate pollution. That is the real crime happening here.

I know, but I am just so NOT down with harrowing folks for trying to alert us.

It IS my bad.

But OldRocks makes me HAVE to think about these thangs,

and HAVE to try to take ALL of creation into my little scheme of things.

I don't know how to explain the BENEFIT that he provides to us, in MAKING us think about our footprints.

I WANT to think it's all BullSpit ~

THAT would be oh! so! convenient.

But I live a double life, in a town and in the country,

and I SEE what we do to wildlife,

and it's not a pretty pic.

We KILL and butcher wild hogs ~

and that's another thang! WHAT have YOU slaughtered, lately? That you SAW, alive and well, kicking and SCREAMING,

Please explain how this related to the fact that Europe is facing its coldest winter in 1,000 years?

Assuming that long range forecast is right, you mean?

Most of the preparation for a changing climate will involve things that are the same regardless if the climate gets warmer or cooler.

It's still basica disaster planning, so either way protecting the population from the elements is what's called for.

Either way stocking up food and so forth is still what's needed

The worst case scenario would be that our preparations will have been wasted because the climate remains constant.

But protecting oneself against a too hot climate or a too cold climate is often the same process

Either way you create shelters against the elements and stock up against diminished food stocks as the crops fail.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea for those of us who can afford it, to stock up for emergencies, anyway.

Saying that humans have an impact doesn't automatically make us the prime movers of environmental apocalypse....In fact, it's very arguable that technological advances make man's activities less of an impact rather than more so....Your example of the air in the L.A. basin is instructive, in that:

1) Smog is much less of a problem today than in the '70s, even though there are easily twice the number of cars on the roads and more industrial activity.

2) The temperature inversions that are the primary reason all that particulate matter gets trapped are completely beyond the control of anything man can do.

But we ARE at the (supposed) TOP of the intelligence ladder, eh?

Were you ever IN L.A. in the '70's? I WAS.

I was also there in the 2000's, if THAT's a "word!"

It's WORSE now ~ I don't KNOW why, and I'm not going to "research" it. I'll depend on personal experience, thank you very much.

L.A. has GROWN in these past, what? 40 years? EXPANDED. Gee, wEnder if THAT could have anything to do with it all? Well, sorry, 'cuz I'm getting ugly about it,

but are you going to tell me that we have IMPROVED our environment with ANY of our technological advances? OTHER than how we've brought our "feetprints" down, a bit?

Humans are aggressive and narcissistic ~ if it isn't for US? Talk to the hand.

It's a sad state of affairs, but that IS how it is. We KNOW and feel that WE are the important thangs, not all this other stuff.

OUR lives Count.

Well, guess what?

WE aren't the only ones this world was created to HOUSE, and even though we were given authority over it all,

we were expected to RESPECT it.

To LOVE it, for it's beauty and for all that it gives us, which is pretty much OUR LIVES.

To treat it the way we do is nothing more than committing mass suicide, imho,

'cuz it WILL come back to bite us in the ass.
I was in L.A. in the '70s and have been there recently...The air is much better, to the point that they had their first smog alert since the '80s back in 2003.

Like it or not, that is an improvement, especially given that there is much more activity going on in the L.A basin today than back then.

Honey..........you really gotta do a little research on this subject. You need to make yourself aware of the special interests who make hay with this climate change hoax. GE, for example, stands to make tens of billions manufacturing what amounts to bogus technology ( as Westwall astutely points out in this thread). GE owns NBC........go watch some of their news stories on climate change = always promoting the alarmist view. GE is a HUGE supporter of Obama. You gotta start using your head here.

Old Rocks and some of the other global warming alarmists are largely motivated, not be science at all, but by a total loathing of the American capitalistic system. The "science" is but a tool for his promoting his true wish: destruction of American capitalism. Look at some of his posts in other forums and you will find this is so. A large majority of the folks so vocal about "global warming" are cut from the same cloth..........they want government control of energy and government control of the means of production in our country. He could care less about the effect on real families in America, such is his disdain for the capitalist...........indeed, a characteristic of all those on the far left. Seeing their "cause" be fulfilled is the single most meaningful thing going on in their lives, these people have some kind of pathological inability to think on the margin.

Lastly, and most importantly.........you need to find out how going to a green ecomomy effects REAL people. Do you know how many people work in the coal industry and how many people work in industry that is related ( like transportation). It is in the millions. You need to make yourself aware of how many jobs would be lost via Cap and Trade compared to green jobs gained. It is appalling and THE definition of what is patently unfair.

All the "science" presented on here by the true believers of the cause is unprovable. And for that, almost 2.5 million people should lose thier jobs?? Think any of them is going to get a green job??? Fat chance..........all of those jobs are spoken for already.

Why do you think I post up my Photobucket classics in here mocking the crusaders? Simple..........because their stuff is a perfect illustration of faulty thinking. There is zero current technology available to be put into operation EVEN IF THE SCIENCE COULD BE PROVEN. Indeed..........we are at least decades away from that ( also, as Westwall astutely points out all the time)

Interstingly...........Matthew is on the fence in here..........but as he does his research, dollar to a stale donut he'll soon be joining Wast and me in embarrassing the OCD k00ks in this forum!!!

I never spend one iota of energy trying to change the minds of the perpetually duped. My only motivation to come in here is to provide curious board members, like Matthew, the political realities of the "science" and the fundementally flawed ideology of the far left in America. And I do it with comedy because it is.............well, comical. Thier ideology has NEVER worked in the history of the world but has been very, very effective at removing freedom and liberty for billions of people!!!

First, we are in the midst of a major extinction period, just on the impacts of man destroying natural habitats.

The Sixth Extinction (ActionBioscience)

There is little doubt left in the minds of professional biologists that Earth is currently faced with a mounting loss of species that threatens to rival the five great mass extinctions of the geological past. As long ago as 1993, Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson estimated that Earth is currently losing something on the order of 30,000 species per year — which breaks down to the even more daunting statistic of some three species per hour. Some biologists have begun to feel that this biodiversity crisis — this “Sixth Extinction” — is even more severe, and more imminent, than Wilson had supposed

Second, the alternative energy sources, nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, ect. are hardly bogus. Iowa gets 14% or more of it's electricity from wind at present, and is adding more as we post. In fact, in 2009, 42% of the electrical production added to the grid in the US was wind.

The price of solar is coming down on a weekly basis, and now there are several manufactures that can manufacture solar for less than $1 a watt. And there are some very innovative ideas out there that would totally change the equation.

Capitalism and socialism are social tools. No more to be worshiped than a crescent wrench. You use them where applicable, and realize that both can be and have been used for suppression as well as expression of freedom.

Just in the wind farms here in Oregon, there is a shortage of technicians, and as soon as someone finishes their training, they have a high paying job.

Unprovable, you silly ass? I have presented the proof starting from Fourier in 1820 to the present.

Kookybill, go back to being a useless troll. For when you pretend to post seriously, all you do is parrot the talking point lies of the energy companies.

Report: U.S. Needs National Strategy for Adapting to Warmer Climes - ScienceInsider

The federal government is way behind on efforts to develop effective strategies to adapt to a changing climate, a new report to the White House says today.

"Even with mitigation efforts, climate change will continue to unfold for decades due to the long atmospheric lifetime of past greenhouse gas emissions and the gradual release of excess heat that has built up in the oceans," the report says. States, cities, and towns could use guidance from the federal government's vast climate science effort on how to prepare for a warmer world, it adds.

Requested by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the report comes out of a 2-day summit held last year that involved both scientists and so-called stakeholders from state and local governments and businesses. These included wildlife managers, water and health officials, city planners, and construction experts. "In the past, meetings like this were just a bunch of academics talking together," said Jack Fellows, an official with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, who helped run the summit and contributed to the report.

And you are about as fucking dumb as they come, ol' Kookybill.

4 Mega-Companies That Started in Garages (and Other Interesting Places) | Investing Answers

Some of the world's biggest companies came from the most humble of beginnings. Here are four major corporations who've each starred in their own rags-to-riches story.

Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG)
"On September 7, 1998, Google Inc. opened its door in Menlo Park, California. The door came with a remote control, as it was attached to the garage of a friend who sublet space to the new corporation's staff of three." -- Google's Corporate History

Just days before that garage door opened, Google
co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin moved out of the dorms, officially incorporated the Google name, and finished raising $1 million from a handful of investors. A friend of Brin's, Susan Wojcicki (now Google's VP of product management), needed help paying the mortgage on her 1,900-square-foot home in Menlo Park, and agreed to lease the garage for $1,700 per month to the 25-year-old Stanford grads.

We're all gonna diiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Get a grip, Rocks.

Get some facts, ol' dingbat.
Rhetoric, and mostly hysterical rhetoric at that, is not the same as facts.

I'll check in occassionally to see if any facts telling me of an inevitablilty show up.

No, you will check in occasionly to see if there is some way to cast doubt, in the same manner as the tabacco companies. You present the same degree of honesty that they do.

Capitalism and socialism are social tools. No more to be worshiped than a crescent wrench. You use them where applicable, and realize that both can be and have been used for suppression as well as expression of freedom.

Brilliant!

I wish I'd said that.

Have no fear, though, O.R., I WILL in the future.

And maybe, if I'm feeling particularly generous, I might even credit you for having originally said it, too.
