Planned Parenthood Gunman Gives Up After Colorado Standoff That Left 3 Dead

A gunman armed with an AK-47-style weapon burst into a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs Friday, shooting at police from inside the building during the ensuing five-hour standoff.

Three people, including a police officer, died during the incident, Colorado Springs Police Department Lt. Catherine Buckley said. Nine others, including five officers, were wounded. All nine were in good condition at area hospitals, she added.

The slain officer was identified as Garrett Swasey, 44, of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs police department. He was married and had a son and daughter, according to the website of his church, Hope Chapel in Colorado Springs.

3 Dead, Gunman in Custody in Colorado Planned Parenthood Shooting

I see the gun nutter, anti choicers are at it again.

Pathetic.
An AK-47....and all he could kill was 3 people???

Well, I guess, if Planned-Parenthood was the target, which still hasn't been established, one has to ask the question.....why was he so armed but didn't shoot a bunch of the hostages?
Well nobody said he was too swift, he is a TPer after all.

The leftist swine are obviously more interested in having a set of facts that comports to their desired narrative rather than concern with the victims and their families.

Clearly, the shooter is a shit bag and should be taken down to the river and promptly dispatched with a firearm, then fed to the catfish. Attempting to equate this loon with the general population who owns firearms and recognize the Second Amendment for what it is: a constitutional proscription of federal regulation.

Finally, in the grand scheme of things, this "mass shooting" was not that bad. It certainly is much less damaging and deadly than MANY attacks by terroristic Muslims. Islamic terrorists are by far a greater threat than these whack job attacks. Maybe if one of those fetus killing, leftist doctors had been carrying then that cop would not have been killed. Personally, I would be unable to sleep at night if I were one of those PP workers and I knew that my nonfeasance (of choosing not to carry and learn to effectively use a firearm) led to the death of innocent people. Of course, these are the same people who will knowingly crush the skulls of a living fetus for pay.

Officer, 2 Civilians Dead in Colorado Rampage
November 27, 2015 - University of Colorado Colorado Springs Police Officer Garrett Swasey was killed by a gunman who opened fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic.
A man suspected of being the shooter who opened fire Friday at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, killing three people including a police officer, has been taken into custody, ending a four-hour standoff in which a gunman traded fire with police and terrorized people who fled the facility. The dead officer was identified Friday night as Garrett Swasey, 44, a six-year veteran with the police department at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. “UCCS officers are sworn, state-certified police officers. Officer Swasey was on duty at the campus and responded in support of Colorado Springs Police,” said Pam Shockley Zalabak, university chancellor, in a statement. “It is with great sadness that I share that the tragic events today at the offices of Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs have touched the campus of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs,” she said.

Along with Swasey, two civilians were killed. Five other police officers and four civilians were injured. The standoff ended about 6 p.m. Mountain time after a chaotic afternoon. “The perpetrator is in custody,” Mayor John Suthers said shortly after the gunman’s arrest. Police said the gunman might have brought explosives to the clinic. Colorado Springs Police Department spokeswoman Catherine Buckley said the shooter was seen bringing items inside the clinic. “This is not a stable scene,” Buckley said before the suspect was taken into custody. The shooting was first reported at 11:40 a.m. Friday. Much of the west side of the city was shut down after the shooting, and people inside a nearby shopping center were told to take shelter inside stores. Penrose Hospital said in a tweet that it had received six patients. It was not immediately clear whether Planned Parenthood was the intended target of the shooting.

At least a dozen ambulances waited on West Fillmore Street, about two miles from Planned Parenthood. “The first (job) as officers is to ensure the public is safe,” Buckley said. “We are doing our job, but it’s tough when our officers are involved.” Heavy snow and rain made driving difficult the day after Thanksgiving in the city, which sits 6,035 feet above sea level. Patches of black ice made the roads slippery and rolling flurries lowered visibility. Shelley Satulla was driving her mother and two young children to the King Sooper grocery store near the Planned Parenthood clinic when police ordered her to pull over. “I didn’t know what to think. It was mass chaos,” Satulla said in an interview. “It was crazy. They were yelling, ‘Shelter in place, shelter in place.’”

Denise Speller, manager of a nearby hair salon, said she heard as many as 20 gunshots in the span of less than five minutes. She told the Colorado Springs Gazette newspaper that she saw a police cruiser and two officers near a Chase Bank branch, not far from the Planned Parenthood facility. One of the officers appeared to fall to the ground and the other knelt to help and then tried to get the officer to safety behind the car, she said. Another officer told Speller to seek shelter inside the building. “We’re still pretty freaked out,” Speller said by phone. “We can’t stop shaking. For now we’re stuck back here not knowing.”

Colorado officer killed in shooting was church elder, retired figure skater
28 Nov.`15 - A police officer killed by a gunman who stormed a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs was a retired champion figure skater and an elder at a Christian church where he taught, led worship teams and played guitar.
Officer Garrett Swasey, 44, was on duty at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs campus on Friday afternoon and he rushed through billowing snow to support colleagues at the scene when first reports came in of a shooter at large. Two civilians were also killed and nine people, including five other police officers, were wounded in the attack. Swasey, a six-year veteran of the university's police department, was married to Rachel Swasey and had two children, a 6-year-old daughter named Faith, and a son, Elijah, 10.

Originally from Boston, Swasey moved to Colorado Springs to train at the Olympic Training Center as a champion ice dancer. Sam Auxier, president of U.S. Figure Skating, said the officer would be remembered as a kind and selfless man who was well-liked by friends and competitors alike. "He died in the line of duty serving the community of Colorado Springs, home to U.S. Figure Skating," Auxier said in a statement. "While we are shocked and saddened by his loss, we are grateful for his service as an officer and his impact as a figure skater." Swasey won the U.S. junior national championship for couples skating in Orlando, Florida, in 1992.

"GRANTED A SERVANT'S HEART"

An online fundraising page set up for the officer's family said Swasey was passionate about his role protecting the community, about his family, and about his faith. Swasey and his wife were one of just four couples listed as elders at Colorado Springs' Hope Chapel Christian church, where they began attending services in 2001. "Initially drawn by its small size, they have grown to love the fellowship and teaching at Hope Chapel," read a profile of the Swaseys on the church's website, alongside a photo of the couple and their children smiling and embracing. The church said both of them had been "granted a servant's heart by God." "Rachel serves behind the scenes leading and watching the little ones in the nursery. Garrett works full time in Law Enforcement and provides oversight to our Care Groups," the church's profile said. "Additionally, as an elder, you will find him sharing his teaching gift as part of the teaching team and sharing his guitar skills on the worship team."

Raj Kumer, 30, working at his father's liquor store, United Wine & Liquor, a few doors down from Hope Chapel in a strip mall, said he had seen Swasey in the parking lot various times in the past and had smiled and waved at him. He said he then saw the officer's photo on TV news late Friday night. "I didn't know he was a cop," Kumer told Reuters. "It's just so, so sad," he added, shaking his head. The church was closed on Saturday. The fundraising page noted that while the officer's funeral costs will be covered by the police, the campaign will be used to start an education fund for his children. A candlelight vigil for Swasey and the other victims of Friday's attack was being organized by students for Saturday night on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs campus. The civilians who were killed on Friday have yet to be identified.

If he's an "anti-choice gun nutter" many of you will pull a RWNJ and jump for joy that you were right and have more political ammunition to use. If you're wrong there's going to be a lot of crow eating at the USMB.
You should try taking the wait and see attitude, it's what unbiased, rational people do.
Wait and see what? Wait for him to say he isn't a gun nutter or anti choice?
Facts and evidence. I know you have no idea what that is but at least strive for rational cognition on occasion.
I know what facts and evidence are. As soon as you hear someone with an AK47 shot up a Planned Parenthood, it's quite evident why he would be in that scenario.
PP kills more people than that on a hourly basis.
They do? Prove that.
Prove it? You don't even know what goes on there? That makes you too ignorant to talk to.

You can't prove what you said is true so stop saying it.

RWNJs make this stuff up every day. They know nothing about abortion and even less about Planned Parenthood, but they want to keep healthcare from poor women so they make it up as they go along.

The murders of the cop and others are the fault of lies like this. Even though we know that ridiculous PP/abortion video is not true, slime like Carly Fiorina continues to use it.

Stop lying and MYOB.

If the murderer had done that, those people would be alive now.

I'm sure he's a nice guy who just had a rough day. It was probably just his meds making him act up. Isn't that what you apologists always say when the mass murdering terrorist is a white guy?
They have a dilemma with that excuse. Cops were hurt as well. When it's White on Black shooting, they know which side to take. White on White? That's somehow different.

You nailed it.

White christian cop gunned down by a nutter who believed women's affordable and legal health care was his business.

Well then, her (and many other's) earlier assumption that it was an attack on PP appears to have been vindicated by the facts and evidence. See how easy that was.

Veteran among those killed in Colorado PP shooting...

Iraq Veteran One of the Victims in Colorado Clinic Shootings
Nov 30, 2015 - The two civilians killed in Friday's shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood clinic were identified by authorities and family members on Sunday.
Jennifer Markovsky, 35, was accompanying a friend to the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic when she was killed in the shooting rampage, her father told The Denver Post. John Ah-King said she grew up in Hawaii and met her husband, Paul, before the couple moved to Colorado when he was stationed here for the military. Ah-King told the Post from his home in Hawaii that Markovsky was a kind-hearted, lovable person with two children. The second civilian killed was identified as Ke'Arre Stewart, 29, Amburh Butler, a lifelong friend and family spokeswoman told the Associated Press. Butler said that Stewart was accompanying someone to the clinic, and leaves behind two girls, 11 and 5, who live in Texas.

Ke'arre M. Stewart.

Stewart served in the Army's Fourth Infantry Division and was deployed to Iraq, where Butler said he would often send her letters describing the horrors he saw on the front lines. "He would tell me how terrible it was, how many guys he watched die. It was terrible for him," Butler told the Associated Press. The Army stationed Stewart at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs in 2013 before he was discharged from the military the following year. "He went someplace where people expect to die, only to come back ... and be killed." Butler said she last spoke to her friend on Thursday, when he sounded upbeat to be spending Thanksgiving with friends. "He was just a standup guy, he would take a bullet for you," Butler said. "He was the most sincere person I'd ever met." Markovsky and Stewart's identities were confirmed by officials, who said a full identification would be provided once autopsies were completed Monday.

The third victim was Garrett Swasey, who worked as a police officer at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs and was called to assist with an active shooter at the nearby clinic. Swasey was married with two children and a co-pastor at Hope Chapel, where he was was remembered Sunday by parishioners who watched a video of him ice skating. Former figure skating champion Nancy Kerrigan told media outlets Sunday that Garrett Swasey was "one of my best friends" as they grew up together practicing figure skating in Melrose, Mass. Before he became a police officer, Swasey was a junior national couples ice dancing champion. An emotional Kerrigan says she wasn't surprised he took a career path where he helped others first. She says he always had fun and did everything with a smile.

Town Demolishes Veteran's House While He Has Surgery
Nov 30, 2015 | When a U.S. Navy veteran traveled from Long Island to Florida for a knee replacement, his house was the last thing on his mind. But now his memory of it is all he can think about.
Philip Williams' home was demolished in the spring by town officials while he spent about six months recuperating from surgical complications in Fort Lauderdale. Back in New York, officials in the Town of Hempstead deemed his modest two-story home unfit for habitation and knocked it down. The 69-year-old has now waged a legal battle against the suburban New York town. He wants reimbursement -- for the house and all the belongings inside. "I'm angry and I'm upset. It's just wrong on so many levels," he said. "My mortgage was up to date, my property taxes were up to date ... everything was current and fine." Williams went to Florida in December 2014 for the procedure, so a friend could help with his recovery. But he developed infections that forced further surgery and heart complications, leaving him hospitalized until doctors deemed him medically able to return home in August.

demolished-vet-house-1200-ts600.jpg

A lot stands empty in West Hempstead, N.Y., after the township had the home that once stood on it torn down.

When Williams pulled up to what should have been a two-story cream-colored cottage with a red door in West Hempstead, there was just an empty lot. "My first thought was there was a fire or something," Williams said. But there was no fire. According to town officials, neighbors had been complaining the house was in disrepair and a blight on the community. Hempstead officials, responding to those complaints, sent inspectors and determined the house was a "dilapidated dwelling" unfit for habitation. So they knocked it down. "The house was in terrible condition for a long time," next door neighbor Keylin Escobar said. "Nobody really lived in the house; the house was abandoned. Everyone who came over to visit, people always say, 'What's going on with this house?' "

Kathleen Keicher, who has lived across the street from Williams for 12 years, said notices tacked to the front door of the home began piling up and the house had holes in the side and appeared unkempt. "I feel terrible. When we knew a house was coming down, it was sad," she said. "We thought the house was coming down, someone would buy the land, a new house would come up, a new family would move in. ... We don't want anyone to lose their home." Williams says he was never contacted and believes town officials thought his house was a so-called "zombie home" -- a dwelling abandoned after foreclosure proceedings begin, but one not yet seized by the bank -- and rushed to demolish it. "The town basically took everything from me," said Williams, who is now staying with a friend in Florida and has only two suitcases of belongings. "The town does not have a right to take all of my property, all of my possessions."

Suspect in deadly Planned Parenthood attack declares self guilty
Wed Dec 9, 2015 - The man accused of shooting three people to death and wounding nine others at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado last month declared himself guilty and a "warrior for the babies" during an outburst in court on Wednesday.
The disturbance, as prosecutors formally presented murder and other charges against Robert Lewis Dear, 57, bolstered assertions by Planned Parenthood executives that the attack on the Colorado Springs clinic was motivated by anti-abortion sentiments. Dear has been held without bond since surrendering to police at the end of a five-hour siege on Nov. 27 that authorities said began when he opened fire with a rifle in front of the clinic, then stormed inside. It was the first deadly assault on a U.S. abortion provider since 2009. Three people, including a police officer, were killed and nine were wounded.

Dear's outburst took place at the start of his hearing in El Paso County court on Wednesday. He was not scheduled to formally enter a plea at the proceedings. "I’m guilty, there’s no trial. I'm a warrior for the babies," Dear blurted out in a loud voice while seated beside his lawyers before the judge. Addressing the judge, defense attorney Dan King raised the issue of Dear's mental competency to stand trial, saying, "I think the problem is obvious." Among the 179 criminal counts brought in the case, prosecutors charged Dear on Wednesday with first-degree murder in the deaths of three people, as well as multiple counts of attempted murder and assault.

Police affidavits filed in the case have been placed under court seal, and authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. However, several media outlets, citing law enforcement sources, have reported Dear uttered the phrase "no more baby parts" in statements to investigators following his arrest. At one point, during a discussion in court about the sealing of documents in the case, Dear spoke out again. "Seal the truth, huh? Kill the babies, that’s what Planned Parenthood does," Dear said. The heavily bearded Dear, a native of South Carolina who once earned a living as a self-employed art salesman, appeared at Wednesday's hearing in shackles and turquoise-colored jail garb.

The judge imposed a gag order on attorneys and law enforcement in the case and set a hearing for Dec. 23, indicating Dear's competency may be discussed then. The case follows renewed pressure from conservatives in Congress this year seeking to cut off federal funding for Planned Parenthood. The lawmakers have cited a video circulated by anti-abortion activists who contend it shows Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood has denied the allegations and says the videos were produced to distort the issue of fetal-tissue donations made by the group for scientific research.

But when a Muslim goes on a shooting rampage, we declare it a condemnation of their entire faith?
