Planned Parenthood wins $2m lawsuit against anti-abortion group behind fake videos and 'malicious campaign'

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/planned-parenthood-wins-2m-lawsuit-013616347.html

An anti-abortion group broke the law by trespassing, illegally recording and manipulating videos to make Planned Parenthood officials appear as though they were profiting off fetal tissue donations, a federal jury ruled on Friday.

The six-week trial ended with the jury ordering the Centre for Medical Progress to pay nearly $2.3m (£1.8m) in damages for violating multiple federal and state laws.

David Daleiden, the president of the anti-abortion group, was found to have trespassed on private property and committed other crimes in recording the 2015 videos. He and other employees of the centre were ordered to pay varying amounts.

So basically all investigative journalism is now actionable.
No, just the dishonest and deceptive.

How do you go undercover without being deceptive?

They judgement had nothing to do with the content of their production, it had to do with them misrepresenting themselves to gain access and trespassing. So basically this judge and jury have now declared that any investigative journalism involving misrepresenting to gain access is now actionable.

This will be thrown out on appeal on 1st amendment grounds.

Probably not... and they'll spend more than that paying for lawyers to run it up the flagpole... so there's that.

You see, the big problem isn't what they uncovered, it's that they deceptively edited the tapes to misrepresent what was happening.

That wasn't part of the judgement. They were judged to be trespassing. The verdict here had nothing to do with the content of the videos themselves.

So basically all investigative journalism is now actionable.

No, just the ones where you illegally tape people and then edit the footage deceptively to smear them.

That's what slave holders used to say.... Keep your nose out of my plantation. You amoral assholes are all alike.

Wow... that's what you are arguing, that a woman's vagina is like a plantation? Really?

What kind of women do you date? Oh, wait, you probably haven't gotten laid since the 90's.

The judgement had nothing to do with the content of the videos, they lost due to "trespass" as they misrepresented themselves to gain access.

So basically now according to this judge and jury anyone who does undercover journalism can be sued by the people they are investigating.

Great win for the press here.

Don't lie.
Don't secretly tape people without their permission
Don't edit the people to misrepresent what occurred.

Frankly, I hope they start holding all journalists to this kind of standard.

So no investigative reporting with video, ever, because your GOD abortion is displeased.

Fucking hack.

Nobody gets a 2 million dollar fine for tresspassing.

Works for me. Frankly, I'm kind of okay with that. You shouldn't be allowed to show any video of a private citizen without a signed release.

This wasn't an investigation, it was a smear.. the videos were deceptively edited to make it look like PP was selling tissue.

Evidently this judge wanted it. and he's a PP supporter and booster. Interesting.

You rail against companies that you think screw people over, and you want to give them protection against journalists trying to go undercover?

Wow, you really suck abortionist dick, don't you?

Matter of priorities... Real journalists don't need to lie and distort tapes. Their ability to screw workers aren't hurt by journalists...

And protecting a woman's right to choose is always more important.

Editing isn't lying or distorting, and again, the judgement didn't find them at fault for that.

it's amazing that you would protect all corporations from journalists as a sacrifice to your abortion god.

Guy, you mistake slander for journalism.

Journalism is you identify yourself as a report, you ask them questions and you honestly report what they said and did.

Slander is why you misrepresent who you are, secretly take tapes, and then re-edit them to make it look like they said things they didn't actually say.

Well worth the money, Planned Parenthood took a huge hit when it was revealed they sell baby body parts. They'll never recover from that bad publicity. My guess is people are sending money to this guy now to help him pay the judgment.

Well, you can guess that... doesn't make it true.

I'm still waiting for you to tell me how you are going to force women to have babies they don't want.

Why not let women kill all the babies and children they don't want? Why stop with abortion? Children up to 12 years old can be legal for mothers to kill. How about it?

You didn't answer my question, did you?

Obviously, if a woman kills her 12 year old, people are going to punish that. There would be nearly universal agreement that should be punished. It would be pretty easy for the cops to prove it... and a prosecutor would have no problem getting a conviction.

So let's say abortion becomes illegal.

First, you'd have to prove a woman had an abortion.. Since most women have them before they are ever showing, good luck with that.

Then you'd have to get cops to investigate... Okay. Good luck with that, you'd have to get a warrant for medical records (already protected) or to do an invasive physical exam. Can't see many cops wanting THAT job.

Awesome... now once Brisco and Logan prove that she flushed it down the toilet... then you have to get a prosecutor to get a grand jury to charge it, and then get an actual jury to convict.

Tell you what, I ever find myself on such a jury, I will vote to acquit I don't care if you got film of the abortion. So will a lot of people.

Your argument can be used to justify legalizing any evil deed.

Your argument can be used to justify legalizing any evil deed.

No, it really can't. "Evil" is subjective.

Once upon a time, slavery was considered "good". The Bible enthusiatically supported it. Today, most of us realize that slavery is evil, but it took a long time to change minds on the subject.

Witch Burning was considered Good. The Bible endorsed it... Then someone realized that there probably weren't any actual witches, just some women who were a bit odd.

The ability to enforce a law relies on consensus, not morality. You think fetuses are people.. that's fine. you are totally entitled to that misguided belief, but since you probably don't have a uterus, it doesn't count for all that much.

I'll give you another example. Prostitution. A majority still thinks Prostitution should be against the law...

Yet in any given city, you can find escort services, massage parlors, strip joints, red light districts... because enough people think it's okay, and because the police really, really don't want to be bothered enforcing it.

You see, the delusion you anti-choice nuts always have is that before 1973, no one was getting abortions. They were. Just as many as they were getting before Roe. Doctors routinely ignored the law, most abortions were performed in a nice safe doctor's office. SCOTUS, including FIVE Republican justices, figured they were just striking down anachronistic laws that no one was following, just as they did with Griswald 8 years earlier.

Little did they suspect that it would be a useful tool to get stupid people to vote against their own economic interests.

A federal jury in San Francisco found that the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress and its president, David Daleiden, broke multiple state and federal laws when they secretly recorded and released videos of Planned Parenthood employees.

The jury awarded Planned Parenthood $2 million in damages, finding that Daleiden and his organization engaged in fraud, trespassing and illegal secret recording.

“David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress intentionally waged a multi-year illegal effort to manufacture a malicious campaign against Planned Parenthood,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, the acting president and CEO of Planned Parenthood.

So Pro-Life Morons, keep making BS up about your personal feelings, on others controlling their bodies.
Guess you can pay for it in court awards for being assholes.
As you never offer to fund the babies to be born.

Actually, you don't control your own body. Want to shoot up some heroin or sell yourself on a street corner?

Nope and nope.

In Nevada you can sell yourself as long as it is at a state sanctioned site...

This is nothing new. It’s how abortion became legal...courts overriding Americans.
Yet Americans overwhelmingly support legal abortion. It’s interesting how you’re constantly wrong.

My state proves that stupid far right radical conservative wrong.

In 1968 the issue was on the ballot for the people of my state to vote. Whether to legalize abortion or not. It passed with a very good margin voting for it. I was too young to vote that time.

In 1981 the issue was on the ballot for the people of my state to vote whether to use state tax dollars to pay for abortions. I was old enough that time and I voted with the majority. It passed again with a good margin.

In 1992 the issue was on the ballot again for the people in my state to vote whether to make abortion legal in my state no matter what any judge or politician says or does. I voted with the majority again and it passed with a good margin.

The issue of making a fertilized egg a human with all rights human beings have was on the ballot in Colorado and Mississippi. It was on the ballot twice in Mississippi. All the times it was on the ballot in those conservative states it lost. Yes, it lost twice in Mississippi.

The person you're replying to is dead wrong. The vast majority of people in America want abortion to remain legal and safe.

If the far right radical extremists ever get their way, this nation will explode and it won't be pretty. The majority in this nation will not stand for it and there will be serious blowback consequences.

The politicians on the far right know this which is why it will remain legal. Plus if it becomes illegal again, the far right radical extremists will have lost one of their main issues to raise money. Money is much more important to those far right radical extremist politicians.

Here is the thing and it is that those like you want abortion to be an option until the mother thumbs up or down after giving birth, so that is also a problem.

Should abortion be legal?

First trimester yes and in all cases of rape and after the first trimester if the mother life is threaten or the baby is deformed and will not survive.

But

You will scream it is the woman body, and yes but in today time she can use condoms, the pill or just keep her damn legs shut or take a morning after pill!

So as long as you keep on passing laws to allow you to abort the child up until the birth then yeah you will have opposition!

So undercover investigation is not journalism?

Bullshit.

I wouldn't consider it journalism. I would consider it fraud.

It definitely was in this case, which is why these misogynistic morons are paying out 2.2MM

it will be overturned on appeal. The judge is a PP supporter and should have recused himself.

it's amazing that you want to end something that goes after those in power just because it could be used against your Abortion God.
