I see how it works in the legal field.

At law school, boys and girls are equally split, 50/50, and they don't even need AA to do that because women and men are pretty much equal in what it takes to get it in, good grades and good LSAT scores, which depend on 50% logic (favoring men) and 50% reading comprehension (favoring women).

Boys and girls are hired as new associates with shiny new briefcases, salaries equal if they work for the same large law firm, and the same ridiculous hours.

But then over the years, changes happen. Despite the long hours, associates get into relationships, get engaged, and get married. A marriage has the opposite effect on a man that it does on a woman. A married man becomes more serious about his career, stops goofing off, and works even harder. Women who get married start thinking more about home and hearth, and less time about career. At this stage, some women begin to drop out of law to go into a career that is less stressful.

When a woman has a baby, that takes a major diversion from the legal career. There is pregnancy leave, and then maternity leave. A new father had more responsibility and more expenses, and starts working even harder. Many young mothers realize they'd rather stay home with baby full time, and more women drop out of law.

And every baby means more women drop out.

And that is why the older the lawyer, the more likely he is a man. In a room full of middle-aged lawyers, there will be typically one or two women and the rest men.
