The Paralympics, coming to a close in London right now, is being shown on TV and prominently reported on the evening news programs in Japan. I'm sad to say that few in the US would even know it is happening from the utter lack of coverage. It's too bad these athletes are not given more of the recognition they deserve.

    What a shame.

To me, competition is about more than who is ultimately the fastest or the strongest, It is about pushing oneself to the absolute limits of one's endurance regardless of handicap. I marvel more over the athlete who has overcome life's obstacles than the one who has been blessed with natural ability.

Determination, perseverance, spirit, .... wherever they are found is commendable.

    We actually agree on something!

I know exactly what you mean. The ABC shows about two hours of highlights each night - they are the only channel to show footage of the Games because there is no money to be made, and therefore the major networks won't touch it with a ten foot pole.

We made such a big deal over our athletes winning a Gold medal, yet there are people competing in these Games who have lost limbs, and have also won Gold medals, yet for some reason, we don't seem to care. Our athletes at the Paralympics are brilliant sportspeople, its a shame we don't give them the coverage their Games so rightfully deserves.

The media, and to a large degree the public, has become so focused on winning at the highest level, that the ability to rise above physical challenges has lost its appeal. That someone overcomes adversity to win only matters if the win at t he highest level of competition.

This same attitude explains why a silver medalist is asked why they lost the gold medal.

It is truly sad that sportsmanship and the joy of the competition has been lost by so many.

Just a good perspective of western politicians' real face, instead of 'bla-bla-bla' about humanism and so on. Just another fact, russians should remember, when WWIII would reach a "full hot" phase...

You don't think the silver medalist would have rather won the gold?

I'm sure they would. But being that close to the top is an accomplishment.

Have you ever won a highly challenging athletic competition?
