Over 800 run for Iran's top Islamic body

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and other moderate political leaders have registered their candidacy for election to the country's top Islamic body. The election is scheduled for February 26th next year.
The body, also known as the Assembly of Experts, consists of 88 Islamic clerics. It has the authority to appoint and dismiss Iran's supreme leader, who has effective control over the country's powerful institutions.
Iranian media said 801 candidates had signed up for the election by the deadline on Wednesday. That's nearly a third more than the 490 who registered in the previous election in 2006.
The candidates include conservative hardliners who abide by the ideology of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the pro-US government.
