Yes, this thread is talking about the past, but I find it odd that after the 1948 war when Jordan occupied the West Bank and the Old City, and Egypt occupied the Gaza strip those events are never mentioned. Ever. It is only the current situation where the 'evil' Israelis are 'occupying' those areas.
Let us refresh. When the Jordanians occupied the West Bank and the Old City, all the residents of the West Bank were given Jordanian citizenship whether they wanted it or not. And many of the "Palestinians" were kept in refugee camps and not truly assimilated; unlike the Jews who were at the same time expelled from the neighboring Arab nations into Israel. And to continue, Jews were not allowed into the Old City and the Jewish quarter was totally demolished. Total intolerance towards the Jews, and in most respects towards the Christians who lived in the Old City as well.

Now after the six day war, the Old City was effectively liberated. But the Israelis still showed tolerance towards the Temple Mount by allowing the Jordanian (or Islamic) Waqf to administer the site.

And another 300,000 Palestinians 'fled' to Jordan where they were not assimilated, but kept in 'refugee' camps.
Why is it now called the 'Occupation' by Israel, but there is never a mention at all of the almost 20 years occupation (and much more intolerant rule) of these self same areas?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordanian_occupation_of_the_West_Bank#cite_note-35The special committee that was to make arrangements for visits to holy places was never formed and Israelis, irrespective of religion, were barred from entering the Old City and other holy sites.[33] The Jewish Quarter and its ancient synagogues were systematically destroyed, and gravestones from the Jewish Cemetery on the Mount of Olives were used to build latrines for Jordanian army barracks.[34][35]
While there was no major interference in the operation and maintenance of Christian holy places, the Jordanian government did not allow Christian institutions to expand,[16] and banned them from purchasing land.[7][19] Christian churches were prevented from funding hospitals and other social services in Jerusalem.[20]
In the wake of these restrictions, many Christians left East Jerusalem.[16][21]

After 1967, all religious groups were granted administration over their own holy sites, while administration of the Temple Mount—sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims—remained in the hands of the Islamic waqf which had held the responsibility for the previous 800 years.
