...was an English teacher at a US embassy while she was married to her second husband. Then moved back to Hawaii and worked to earn a PhD in anthropology. While working on her PhD she took a job at the Ford Foundation as the program officer for women and employment. She was instrumental in building Indonesia's microfinance program from 1988 to 1992. She then traveled around the world helping other countries and banks start their own microfinancing programs. She was awarded her PhD in 1992.
