Young illegal immigrants are lining up by the thousands at consulates across the country to take advantage of the Obama administration program allowing them to apply for a two-year reprieve from deportation.

As many as 1.8 million undocumented immigrants could be eligible for the program, which kicked off Wednesday. Under the new rules, applicants can fill out a six-page form, pay a $465 fee and submit documents proving their identity in order to qualify.

Immigration officials say the documents will be closely scrutinized, given the potential for fraud, but there is no uniform standard. Applicants are supposed to show they arrived in the U.S. before they were 16, and that they're enrolled in school or vocational training, or have a high school degree.

The lines began forming on Tuesday, as illegal immigrants tried to get a leg up in seeking their passport applications.

"We are waiting for our passports. We want to get our passport because Obama might be asking for them," applicant Kristi Alarcon told MyFoxHouston, as she stood in line outside Houston's Mexican consulate.

That is what the Covered California website explains to illegals. They also make sure to let illegals know that none of the information given for healthcare will be shared with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to Bloomberg, ObamaCare isn’t attracting the Latinos, so this latest move by Obama appears to be another desperation move. I predict a “Hail Mary” soon, when ObamaCare offers a voucher for Taco Bell or some other such nonsense.

So they can get a bill they either can’t or won’t pay.

Immigration offices saw long lines in Los Angeles as thousands of undocumented immigrants nationwide began applying to delay deportation for two years and get work permits -- and immigrants say the Dream Act gives them hope.

All of this is possible because of President Barack Obama's Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Those who came to the U.S. before they were 16, spent five years here, earned their high school diploma and have no criminal record will be eligible for citizenship.

While critics say the program basically grants backdoor amnesty and favors illegal immigrants over unemployed, Arlette Gaona said she hopes it will be her first step toward living the American dream.

"We're going to prove the things we are capable of doing as long as we get a chance," she said.

Undocumented youth who qualify for the program, called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, beginning today can file applications downloaded from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. Each one must be accompanied by a $465 fee.

The program in itself will not produce immediate citizenship or give its participants permission to travel outside the United States.

To take part, immigrants must be under 31 and prove they arrived before they turned 16, have been in the country at least five years, are in school or have either graduated or served in the military. They also cannot have a criminal record.

Immigrant advocates are planning ceremonial events to welcome the new policy and workshops to instruct participants how to proceed. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles says its staff will be helping undocumented youth with paperwork starting today.

I find it interesting that American's "information" is freely given to the IRS (where Obamacare is concerned) but if you're illegal your information is "confidential" where ICE is concerned.

I see your point and your idea has merit but I think the best solution is to seal our border tighter than a drum. But I also believe that we SHOULD save that information and pass it along to ICE. Knowing that their information would be passed along would keep them from signing up for Obamacare. Then, when they go to the hospital to have their anchor baby, the hospital would be forced to report to the proper authorities that folks are trying to get free medical coverage without insurance (which is now the law). Perhaps that would make sneaking into the USA a little bit less appealing.
