A White House official says President Barack Obama will call for a five-year freeze in non-security, discretionary spending during his State of the Union address.

The official says the proposal will be part of the president's plans to reduce the deficit that he will outline in Tuesday's primetime address. The official says Obama will also call for lawmakers to back a five-year plan put forth by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to save $78 billion in defense spending.

"In areas outside the freeze, we also will be looking for cuts and efficiencies," a senior White House official told NBC News. "For instance, the president is putting forward a five-year plan put forward by Secretary Gates to achieve $100 billion in defense savings."

All we had to do was take the House?!

How flip flop is this?

Not that I mind having a fake fiscal conservative in the WH. I'll take a fake one doing what I want him to do than a real one pretending.

ahh, he sold out. Now everyone knows that all that fundamental change crap is out the window cuz big 0 wants to get re-elected first and do what he promised 3rd.

And we did even have to take the Senate. Imagine how conservative he would be if we had..

not good enough, roll it back to 06-07, then lets do that......and I would wait till you hear it ALLLLLLLLLLLL before celebrating , then he has to sign the budgets to make it happen.........;)

There is probably less here than meets the eye. This is the same guy who called for his cabinet to find $100M in cuts. They didnt do it.
The same guy who called for agencies to review regs for cost. That won't happen either.

But as the nearby chart shows, Mr. Obama's major contribution to deficits has been a record spending spree. In 2007, before the recession, federal expenditures reached $2.73 trillion. By 2009 expenditures had climbed to $3.52 trillion. In 2009 alone, overall federal spending rose 18%, or $536 billion. Throw in a $65 billion reduction in debt service costs due to low interest rates, and the overall spending increase was 22%.

<snip>

The tragedy is that Mr. Obama's fiscal conversion is coming a year too late, assuming it is now real. If the President and his party really are serious, they can do more than promise a spending freeze after 2012. They can stop spending more now: Drop the health-care bill, cancel the unspent stimulus spending from last year, kill the $150 billion new stimulus that has already passed the House, and bar all repaid bailout cash from being re-spent. Everything else is marketing.

something is better than nothing.

I know we got a long way to go and obama is no penny pinching miser, but it beats not doing a thing on curbing spending.

He's gonna close Guantanamo and post every Bill for 3 days before the vote too!

He's awesome!!!

Closing gitmo would cost hundreds of millions, he learned it's a dumb idea.

posting all the bills?

no one beleived that bs from the get go.

But hey! If he says he's freezing and making cuts, he's gonna have to show it worked or he's done in 2012

He increased federal spending by more than 25% in two years, and now wants to freeze it?

N'uh Uh.

Not good enough, bub.

Republicans assured us throughout the campaign that since 2008, federal spending only increased 100B. That's how they claimed 100B in cuts would roll it back to 2008 levels.

As for this proposal - he's already made a 2-yr version of it, months ago. Making it more savings than a single concrete Republican proposal since Eisenhower.

Speaking of this proposal: It's a freeze on non-defense discretionary spending, a miniscule portion of the budget. Until we're prepared to address defense and "nondiscretionary" spending we're just putting nice shades on the windows.

So were going to freeze spending at what around $3.6 trillion... does this still mean trillion dollar or more deficits every year over the next five years?

Yes, it would seem so.

It's a freeze at current levels, with nominal cuts. He also froze pay raises for fed employees.

It's not a lot, but it's better than nothing. I know it's gonna take a monumental effort on the behalf of actual conservatives to lower the debt/def.

We need to roll this back to below $2.8T at a minimum.

This thread is proof that no matter what Obama does there are just some who will ALWAYS criticize his every move. Pathetic.
