This is getting a little creepy.
According to one estimate, since last year the Department of Homeland Security has stockpiled more than 1.6 billion bullets, mainly .40 caliber and 9mm.

DHS also purchased 2,700 Mine Resistant Armor Protected Vehicles (MRAP).

It's not the "Obama DHS". It is DHS. Remember...DHS was founded by President Bush.

They are armored vehicles, bought by DHS. DHS will use many of them...some for their Coast Guard, ICE, Border Patrol, etc, etc duties. But many of them will be sent out in DHS Law Enforcment Grants, and go to state, county and city SWAT teams. Why? Because cops at all levels, Federal, State, County, City, are tired of getting shot and killed. If you were a SWAT cop, and got activated to a madman with a rifle barricaded in a house, popping rounds at people, maybe even killed a couple, what kind of car would YOU want to roll up in? A Chevy Tahoe? An Astrovan? Or an armored vehicle? What kind of car would your wife and daughter want you to be rolling up in???

Easy answer, right?

Oh, as for why MRAPS, well, private defense contractors built huge numbers of MRAPs for the military. Now, they have a lot of surplus on their hands, and DHS can get them fairly cheap since the wars are drawing down.

Its the same reason so many domestic SWAT teams got surplus M16's from the military. Sure, an MP5 would probably be a better tactical choice for a SWAT team......but, the M16's from military surplus are FAR cheaper than an MP5, which the military rarely uses anymore. And we dont want to waste tax dollars, right? So they go with the cheapest option.

And buying readily available MRAP's is much cheaper than asking them to develop a whole new concept vehicle for domestic law enforcement just because a bunch of paranoid rednecks dont like them buying MRAPs.

You idiots realize that domestic law enforcement has been using armored vehicles for their SWAT Teams for......oh, DECADES???? Last I checked, never in the past few decades did we get shuffled into labor camps.

BTW, you should see the types of military vehicles the French and German national police use in-country.

I think you're fishing in mud here. SWAT's are not using M16, since MP5 and M16 are totally different weapon. Pre 86 original Colt M16, class 3, fully automatic could cost up to $16K, while H&K MP5 with ACOG and silencer will cost $4500 top.

Sooo, if your statement is correct, why SWAT is buying CQBR, SS 551 / 552 and HK G36K / G36C instead of getting "cheap" M16" from surplus?

Btw, why to buy $230K vehicle if there are so many HUMVEE's in surplus and you could get armored and ready to roll for $160K. Still cheaper...
