What a stupid thing to say. According to the NYT if some 300 pound thug attacks you, you can't pull a knife and stick him until you have determined if he's armed or not.!!!

And while defenders of the police like to point to thousands of nonfatal misdemeanor arrests as evidence that officers are acting in a way that is reasonable and safe, there can never be a justification for any lethal assault on an unarmed man, no justification for brutality.

Hey NYT. Why don't you talk about the dillon taylor case?. That's another cop kills unarmed man - but the races are reversed.

Various other non-lethal methods could have been employed. The chokehold employed is actually banned for Police-use in NY. If they had followed proper procedure, the man would likely still be alive. So them skating on his really is preposterous. They all have to be held accountable. The anger on this is justified.

The chokehold is not banned as in illegal. It's just a department policy.

Fact remains this thug would be alive if he had not resisted arrest. The cops don't know if you're armed or not.

It is EXPLICITLY BANNED by the NYPD & has been for a long time.

The black man had an arrest record a mile long and the cops knew it. Don't give us that "gentle giant" crap, you fool.

Therein lies the problem in all of this. Everyone talks about race, and the real issue, the police, is treated as a secondary issue when it should be the primary issue. For example: You started a thread about the merits of certain behaviors by the police, and immediately reply with a segue into race issues, before anyone else has even had the chance to address the original issue.

I am not giving you anything but a picture of your own hypocrisy concerning the police. You mind your own business and expect the cops to leave you alone, but the very act of standing, walking or driving in the "wrong" place makes it perfectly acceptable for the cops to stop and detain black men in your mind.

So I am allowed to chokehold someone. If it is against department policy it is against the law.

This is the most insane reason to kill a man... Are you happy with police doing chokeholds on everyone in america for this frivolous of reasons...

And by the way if you say yes, the NYPD didn't think so and this is why....

This officer was told not to chokehold someone cause they are dangerous, he ignored it and acted in a reckless manner and someone was killed...

No. The real problem is blacks are animals with 65ish IQs whom whites support thru welfare. THINK

The "gentle giant" eric garner was NOT minding his own business. He was selling illegal cigarettes and the cops knew it.

That is IRRELEVANT

Is there , or is there not a departmental policy prohibiting that chokehold?

It's a yes or no question

No it isn't. You can't think.

Actually , it IS.

If that cop wasn't wearing a badge and he put someone in a choke hold like that , it would be assault.

PERIOD

People on BOTH sides sure need to educate themselves on what police may or may not do in their roles.

You can't say "fuck department policy" and put a guy in a choke hold, and if you do , for Christ's sakes, don't do it on a sidewalk in NYC

Selling untaxed cigs is not a capital crime, the guy did not deserve what happened to him. A policeman got away clean with directly causing the death of a citizen, there is no rationale that makes this a justifiable homicide.

Unarmed men kill people every day, including police officers. Michael Brown was unarmed. Had he gotten Officer Wilson's gun, he would no longer have been unarmed. By then, of course, it would be too late.
