The main problem with the Casinoes..it that it is seldom Indians that "really" own them.

That's bullshit!
That's right. The Tribal corporations own them. The members of the tribe are the shareholders. It's about as close to a successful communist enterprise as you can get in many ways. Well, more like a massive family owned business.

Of course, never play blackjack at Oneida Bingo and Casino. They leave only 2-10 aces in a 7 deck shoe and pay the fines for cheating like a business expense.

Well..that's the conservative meme.

The reality is different.

TIME Magazine: Look Who's Cashing in at Indian Casinos

Imagine, if you will, Congress passing a bill to make Indian tribes more self-sufficient that gives billions of dollars to the white backers of Indian businesses—and nothing to hundreds of thousands of Native Americans living in poverty. Or a bill that gives hundreds of millions of dollars to one Indian tribe with a few dozen members—and not a penny to a tribe with hundreds of thousands of members. Or a bill that allows select Indian tribes to create businesses that reap millions of dollars in profits and pay no federal income tax—at the same time that the tribes collect millions in aid from American taxpayers. Can't imagine Congress passing such a bill? It did. Here's how it happened—and what it means.

Subsequently, Martin negotiated a deal with Paragon Gaming, a Las Vegas company, to develop and manage a casino. Paragon is headed by Diana Bennett, a gaming executive and daughter of Vegas veteran and co-founder of the Circus Circus Casino William Bennett. Martin's Augustine Casino opened last July. With 349 slot machines and 10 gaming tables, it's the fifth and by far the most modest casino in the Palm Springs area. But it stands to make a lot of non-Indian investors—and one Indian adult—rich.

Maybe victims from the standpoint of they lost most of their valuable land and had millions of their population erradicated.

But at least they have their casinos

The one really big hope for this country is that when it has done something wrong, there are a good many people that will admit the fault..and try to correct this.

And then there are conservatives.

Hey stupid, tell me how throwing 13 billions dollars a year at native americans has helped them?

They have had more federal help than any group in the US and still they have the lowest poverty rate.

Damn you liberals are some stupid fucks!

To which 99% of Democrats would respond that the reason it hasn't helped was because the Government didn't spend nearly enough....

The Great Paul Krugman ( The Patron Economist God of the Left) would probably respond that way....

I saw a Stossel piece on TV recently comparing two tribes in the same state. One tribe take government handouts and the other doesn't.

The tribe that didn't is a thriving bunch of people who started their own companies, live in nice homes and seem to have a wonderful life.

The tribe that is dependent on the government for their existence is a bunch of people living below poverty standards...pretty sad actually. :(

On a side note, thanks for proving that government involvement in Indian affairs is no good.

Don't you love it when they make special interest legislation?
