Senator will fight airline carry-on bag fee
Asks Treasury Department to stop levy that is ‘slap in the face to travelers’

ALBANY, N.Y. - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said Sunday he's trying to get the federal government to prohibit airlines from charging a fee for carry-on baggage, calling it a "slap in the face to travelers."

The New York Democrat is making a personal plea to the Treasury Department to rule that carry-on bags are a necessity for travel, which would make them exempt from a separate fee outside the ticket price.

"Airline passengers have always had the right to bring a carry-on bag without having to worry about getting nickeled and dimed by an airline company," Schumer said. "This latest fee is a slap in the face to travelers."

So, no impending economic crash. The safety of airline passengers is not in question. Schumer thinks the government needs to tell business what they can and cannot charge for. I await the cry of carry-on luggage is Constitutionally protected!

This is why almost every airline in this country is going bankrupt.

Except for the few that still offer what was once the norm: free meal, no charge for checked bags, etc.

Like JetBlue.

can't wait for high speed railways to replace airlines. they are ridiculous

I don't know of a soul who likes this idea. Let the market tell Spirit it is a losing idea. The federal government has no place here. By the way, the other airlines have to account for fuel usage by carry-ons. They just include it in the ticket price. Does this charge make Spirit more expensive than the others now?

Another Washington idiot that doesn't know the difference between a right and a privilege.

If you don't like baggage fees then don't fly an airline that has them. Southwest flies pretty much everywhere and they don't charge.

The policy doesn't bother me. I hate it when people drag a couple big carryon items, take up most of the overhead space, and then block the aisles as people are attempting to board and deboard. If they wish to do this, let them pay more for the privilege.

At the end of the day, companies have the right to price their products and services the way they see fit.
