But that was before 1972, when the Democratic Party went, quite literally, insane and nominated left-wing anti-war extremist George McGovern for President.
And my parents, both Chicago Democrats, were shocked and appalled as Mayor Daley's delegation was escorted off the floor of the Democratic Convention.
And they, like millions of middle-class Americans, were abandoned by the Democrats and found a new home in the Republican Party.
Ronald Reagan's platform of a strong defense and fiscal responsibility brought millions more Democrats over to the Republican Party, people who were weary of Jimmy Carter's defeatism and weakness abroad.
But the Republican Party continued to be seen by the working class as pro-business and anti-working man, so the working class whites continued to vote Democratic after Reagan.
But now, Trump has brought into the Republican Party the working class, who now see that a President can be both pro-business AND pro-working man, there is no need to think that one must oppose the other.
This new alliance of business and labor in Trump is what's really wrecking the Democratic Party. Now, all they have is upper-class big city urbanites and the welfare class. People who actually work for a living, white collar workers AND blue collar workers, and the rural folks who run America's farms, are now firmly in the Republican Party.
