Musical Artists You Mourned When They Died... And The Ones You Didn't Mourn...

I mourned the passing of Otis Redding (I still remember where I was when I heard Otis died...)

same with John Lennon (why'd he have to go instead of Paul...?!)

also mourned the untimely passing of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Croce, Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Harrison, Frank Zappa, Eva Cassidy, Warran Zevon, others that I'm blanking on at the moment and will think of later...

didn't particularly care about the passing of Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Michael Jackson, others that aren't worth the effort to try to remember...

What's wrong with Jim Morrison? The Doors rocked.

The Doors did indeed kick ass... at first...

and I was a big fan when they first hit the scene... bought their first coupla albums as soon as they came out...

but after that, JM became a rather pathetic parody of himself...

and, while it was, of course, tragic that he died when he did, it didn't really much matter to me 'cause he'd pretty much shot his wad...

as opposed to, say, Jimi and Janis... who died that same Autumn of '70 and held such promise for more great stuff... 'specially Jimi...

hard to believe it's been more'n 30 years since he died...

This little clip shows so much of why I love Billy Preston. I've never seen another artist take such joy in music. He is definitely the biggest influence on my career, and especially my organ playing.

Your McCartney comment was not cool.

make no mistake... I was not wishing for Paul's death...

I just woulda rathered that John (the greatest of the Beatles) had stayed around longer than Paul (the lamest of the Beatles)...
Now, see, I think that Paul is the greatest Beatle. Lennon may have been the soul, but Paul was the heart. I admit that I am a sucker for silly love songs.

A lot of people do not know that Billy was a child prodigy, and started touring with Mahalia Jackson's gospel group when he was, like, 9/10/11 years old!

Also, it is little known that he wrote Joe Cocker's biggest hit "You Are So Beautiful".

as far as I'm concerned, he gets the award for genuinely happiest musical performer ever...

wish he coulda lived forever...

I here what you're saying. I do like most of the Doors' catalog; but then there's The Soft Parade - the worst of their career, and possibly one of the worst albums of the 70s.

Marc Bolan...

You clearly are older than me, sir!

I love his music, but posthumously. I wasn't aware of him when he was alive. And actually, I'm a much bigger fan of his brother, Tommy.
